Running Clock Rule Change

Featured Replies

I was told tonight that the running clock rule has been changed to initiate at a 36 point differential. Here is the announcement from KHSAA.

8/12/13 Reminder about Football Running Clock Procedure | Kentucky High School Athletic Association

This notice effects all football games played in Kentucky involving KHSAA member schools at al levels of play.

The point differential to initiate the running clock has been changed from 45 points to 36 points. Though this was previously noticed to all football coaches, this reminder is necessary as the season is about the begin. As was stated in the earlier notice email, the Commissioner’s Football Advisory Committee, which is made up of coaches and athletic administrators throughout the state, felt strongly that having had ample time to evaluate the previous difference, and with a desire surrounding injury prevention and efficient conduct of the games, that the number should be changed.

Is this good or bad for high school football in Kentucky?

It's good for the kids who don't get to see the field a lot, should give them more playing time now once a running clock is started.

The running clock is always good and I think it starting at 36 is way better than at 45. Too many hurt feelings passed around when the starters are kept in until the clock starts running at 45. 36 is just right IMO.

I actually think the opposite. You will be surprised how few snaps you can get off when the clock is running.

Of course, since there is less "game left," it makes coaches more likely to put subs in "earlier" from a clock standpoint (mid-3rd Qtr instead of early 4th for example).

At only 5 TDs + a 2 point conversion, you could see some very quick games. Some coaches may worry about game conditioning if they haven't scheduled quality opponents.

Overall, probably a good move. I personally would have gone with 40 or only use it in the 2nd half, but I am OK w/ this rule.

I think just the opposite, HB.

I think the running clock limits the PT for the reserves. The game flies by ie less plays.

I get what the positives are for this rule but IMO it really hurts the kids that need more time the most - the reserves.

Sorry but hate the idea. Game will go way too fast. As to the " too many hurt feelings" comment. That right there says it all. Not saying you are this way PP92, but to those who are, please!

Agree with both.

Those running clocks move quick...especially when your reserves are strictly running the ball against the oppositions 1st string defense as they sell out against the run.

The good news is the teams that are adept at consistently playing in running clock games will potentially have one less possession to worry about an unnecessary injury. Will be interesting to see how many teams go for 2 on that 5th TD now who would normally be content on kicking XP's?

Even more specifically, how long until a NKY team accuses Highlands of running up the score when they go for 2 up already up 41-7 at the start of the 3rd Quarter?

I have always though there should be some kind of sliding scale. If the differential is 50 at halftime. Start the clock. 45 at the 6 minute mark of the third, start the clock. 40 at the start of the 4th, start the clock. 35 at the 6 minute mark of the 4th, start the clock. Or some variation thereof.

:D

I'm definitely not. I've always said score as much as you can until the clock says 00:00. It's on the defense to stop you. If they are outmatched, so be it. Step your game up of schedule more wisely next year. Simple process.

I've had to defend Boyle 'running up the score' way too many times over the last 7 years. Truthfully I miss those days when I had to defend Boyle leaving the starters in until we got up 49-0. Sigh......

That's what JV games are for. The reserves.

It won't take long for feelings get hurt. It never does. And in the smartphone age people will start complaining about it during the game thanks to wifi, 4G and 4GLTE.

I though 40 was about right. But this is better than 45.
