Running Clock Rule Change

Featured Replies

Can the coaches agree to a running clock sooner than the rules allow? For example, using the 45 point rule, the score is 42-0 early in the second quarter ... could the coaches agree to start running the clock then even though it is short of the 45 point rule?

Yes, as long as both coaches agree, the running clock may be used anytime. Coaches can agree to end a game at any point.

I agree that no running clock should be implemented until the 2nd half, unless the losing coach calls "No Mas" and ask for it earlier.

The one thing I hate about these types of games is when a losing teams upper class men, start teeing off on the winning teams freshmen late in a game. I've seen players get their butt kicked all night, then start taking cheap shots at the younger and in some cases much smaller JV and freshmen players that are in to run the clock out.

I saw coach called a time out and walk all the way across the field one time and warned the other coach that he would put his starters back in if the dirty play continued against his younger players.

Schedule stronger opponents. Even in a victory you won't hang 35 on Elder in the first qtr.

Shows how little you are paying attention. Running clocks typically occur in district games and most often in 1st and 2nd round playoff games. I can't recall any running clock with Beechwood outside of those.

I thought people would be smarter than that by this day and age. A coach calls the wolves off and the opponent is taking cheap shots? I guess this sort of thing happens more often than I am aware of.

Yep. We've had to put our starters back in to protect our JV/Freshmen players. That normally stops it.

I have watched that happen as well and just now reminded of it reading your post. You make a good point. As for one coach crossing the field on the other, I haven't witnessed that but can see where it would happen, bad situation for all.....coaches. players, officials and the fans watching the game. I know of one time that scenario happened years ago (no mercy rule), the Raceland coach had substituted every kid he had (after 2nd half kick ran back for TD), was running basic (up the middle run plays) to take as much clock as possible. The opposing coach (will not mention name or school) put in / left his starters in and started exactly what you described with the obvious cheap shots. No crossing the field needed , our coach put the starters back in, forced a turnover - ran two plays, scored-2pt conv. Message sent and received, the opposing coach substituted his younger backup players immediately and then both ran out the remaining time in the half/game .

That was an exception, most games that I have seen like that both coaches play their JV kids, the game obviously over and younger players got good experience.

I don't like it. At 45, it gave the back up players more time to get experience if a coach was smart, and kept the score around 36. With the rule now at 36, it will be hard for coaches to keep the score under that limit and get playing time for the back up players. I think this will lead to more second string players playing JV to get experience instead of getting it on Friday night.

Not a good change in my mind.

You make a good point, I understand the thinking of lowering the score limit but agree that it should remain where it's at.
