Speaking in tongues?

Featured Replies

We are studying Acts in Wednesday night bible study, and in chapter 10 verses 45-47 it talks about the Holy Sprit appearing and being "poured out" onto the Gentiles that Peter is there to share the word with, and they start speaking in tongues.

So, I asked the question, does speaking in tongues still occur? It doesn't in our church and I have never seen it anywhere I have ever been, but some believe that it does and I have heard stories of it happening, one very convincing one. Others believe that it doesn't and point to some biblical references of why, and our Pastor kind of took this path. Anyway, it sparked an interesting conversation, so I thought I would ask the question here. Does speaking in tongues still occur? Thoughts?

Umm, meant to put this in the Religion thread...can a mod please move? Thx

Speaking in tongues means speaking another language fluently without every "studying" it. When I hear people just babbling or saying a bunch of jibberish(sp?) it makes me laugh and shows IMO a poor interpretation of what speaking in tongues was/is referring too.

At my brother's church, they "speak in tounges" regularly actually. It's actually pretty neat once you get used to it, and it's powerful too.

They aren't speaking a crazy language or anything like that. It usually happens after a the lyrics of the song have ended, and the band continues to play. The person singing will sound something like "Oh my Lord-ord-ord-ord ohohohohohoh nanananananana ohhhhhh", or something close to that. They call it speaking tongues anyway.

Most times it kind of sounds like yodeling.

My brothers church sees it as praising God without words. They say it's because there are no words powerful enough to praise God at times.

The religion teacher at Brossart claims to speak in tongues.

Okay, I have a question, and seeing this thread reminded me about it, and thought I might as well go ahead and toss it out.

I was born and raised (and still continue) in the Church of Christ. However, my in-laws are Baptists (from SE Kentucky). A couple of weeks ago, we were down at their place for the weekend, and ended up attending one of their services. My question centers around the "delivery method" that the speakers used. They would start out in a very calm, "normal" delivery. But, after 30-60 seconds or so (I wasn't really timing them), they worked themselves up into this sort of "rhythm", in which they ended each phrase with an exaggerated inhalation. This would go on and on and on. (I told my wife afterwards that I almost felt like I was listening to an auctioneer.)

So, my naive question is...why? I mean as an "outsider", I was completely distracted by the way they were talking, as opposed to being able to focus on what they were saying.

i feel the same. Not for me. But some like it and expect it and enjoy it. I'm not one if those.

^ Great movie.

As to the topic at hand, I have heard of people under extreme duress speaking in strange tongues. Happened to my older brother once, except I think in that instance, it was more a steady torrent of obscenities and swearing of all kinds.

So, in other words, it has a lot to do with theatrics.

I had several years of Spanish in HS, and a year of Russian in college. However, when I'm stressed, I only end up saying to other folks, "Pardon my French."

I blame Scut Farcas.

Biblically they are not speaking in tongues, we talked about this during our conversation Wednesday night. Doubledeuce has it right in what speaking in tongues is. The Bible, and I think Paul in particular speak of this as well and actually warns against it. Not saying your brothers church isn't praising and wholeheartedly worshipping the Spirt, but what you described is not speaking in tongues
