Speaking in tongues?

Featured Replies

Many do not know that there is a significant movement in the Catholic Church called the Charismatic Renewal. Yes, it is accepted by the hierarchy of the Church as being valid. In Northern KY alone, there are several prayer groups that practice the Gifts of the Holy Spirit (speaking in tongues being one of them). There are Masses celebrated in that tradition. The Mustard Seed Community holds one on the First Friday of every month at Mother of God Church. Those curious about what it is all about can attend something called a Life in the Spirit Seminar (a program that lasts once a week for 6 weeks) which is held once a year. For many (not all), it tends to be a life changing experience. I am one of those. I accepted Christ in a deeper way (a very good thing) and I developed a hunger to minister to others within my parish. There are actually 2 types of tongues mentioned in the Bible (1 Cor 12) but that is a much longer discussion. Paul does mentioned that tongues is a "lessor gift". Having love is much more important. I do not practice the Gifts so much any more, but I still look fondly on my younger days when I did. I look it at as a step that I took, enabling me to pursue the other work that God wanted me to do.

I fully support whatever prayer groups or anything else they'd like to do outside mass.

Mass, however, has a very specific function: the celebration of the sacrament of Holy Communion. Anything that takes away from that purpose ought to be looked at with extreme caution, in my opinion.

nkypete...not sure I quite understand something in your post. Are you saying anyone can speak in tongues if they so chose? Kind of what I gleaned from parts of your post but I'm not sure that's a point you are trying to make or not. Also, can you elaborate a little more on the Charismatic Renewal? I've never heard of it and would be interested in learning about what exactly that movement is. Thanks.

Those Masses are very sacred events. The Eucharist is always the primary focus. People are extremely tuned into the Word of God that is proclaimed and they listen intently to the homily. Attendees really love being at Mass! Members of the community are respectful of Papal Authority and Church tradition. They tend to be part of social causes such as the Pro-Life (for example, saying rosaries or protesting in front of abortion mills). That said, the atmosphere is not for everybody. They tend to sing EVERY verse of a song. They may sing several songs before Mass even starts. Their joy may be exhibited by some raising or lifting their hands in praise of God. The Masses are usually much longer (nobody cares about where they need to go afterwards). Everyone has genuine love for one another. The Mustard Seed Community Mass is usually a healing Mass as well. Those with physical, emotional, spiritual, or financial needs can receive prayers after Mass through the laying on of hands. Catholics have the sacrament of Confirmation to "confirm" the decision their parents made for them by getting them baptized. It is the sacrament of the Holy Spirit. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit (while not a sacrament) is an opportunity for those who want more of an outpouring of the Spirit in their lives. It is very tough not to see God in the middle of all of this just by virtue of the fruit of the changes in people's lives.

I thought a link might help to answer some of your questions. It explains the Catholic Charismatic Renewal a lot better than me.

Charismatic Renewal - General

^ Great movie.

As to the topic at hand, I have heard of people under extreme duress speaking in strange tongues. Happened to my older brother once, except I think in that instance, it was more a steady torrent of obscenities and swearing of all kinds.
