Alex Trebek makes 12-year-old Jeopardy contestant cry

Alex Trebek Almost Makes 12-Year-Old Jeopardy! Contestant Cry - UsMagazine.com

The question Hurley received was, "Abraham Lincoln called this document, which took effect in 1863, 'a fit and necessary war measure.'" He answered it correctly, but unfortunately added an extra "t" making the word "emanciptation," ultimately, losing out on the $3,000 he bet.

Adding to the sting, the 73-year-old host also showed just how correct contestant Skyler Hornback -- who eventually took first place with $66,000 -- was with his answer. "It is spelled correctly also," Trebek pointed out.

"The thing that bothered me most was the way Alex Trebek and the producers treated my son. They were kind of smug," Hurley's father, Thomas Hurley II, told CNN on Sunday, Aug. 4. "It's a kid's tournament! Everyone knew what he meant."

Bet Trebek has to study the answers before each show so not to come off as a jackwagon. Oh, wait, he did that anyway.

Tough break for the kid but that's a Jeopardy rule, and rules are rules...

I thought the rules of Jeopardy have always been that you must spell the final answer correctly.

Rules are rules, but being a penisaurus erectile about it is optional. It was a kid. We don't even do that to Ram.

A couple of things...one, the rules may be the rules, but I've seen some adults write their final questions so poorly that you couldn't distinguish ALL of the letters. And, yes, some of those have been considered "correct". If you're going to penalize a 12 year old, you better start scrutinizing the adults too.

The other thing is, Trebek should realize who the contestants are he's dealing with. It's bad enough when he comes off pompous when he's dealing with adult players...but, with kids? Now he's just being mean.

I'm certainly not a fan of Alex Trebek. He always comes off as so pompous when he gives the correct answers as if he knew them before he read them off the cards in front of him.

You think you're pretty smart, don't you, Trebek? What with your Diego mustache and your greasy hair!

Canadians are vicious. Just look at hockey.

Trebek has always been a major jerk to contestants on the show. Even 12 year old contestants. It always irks me when he reads something from a different language and he has to over-enunciate as if he is fluent in 75 different languages. You can just hear the smugness coming through the screen.

The day is mine Trabek!

I guess maybe Alex is a butt hole due to this...

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see anything wrong with the sequence of events and what was said. It seemed to me that Trebek was simply making it clear why the other boy's answer was correct. He's 12....buck up Smarty!

I agree. Who would have thought that RM and I would be the heartless ones?
