Report: NCAA investigating Johnny Manziel

Featured Replies

Why would he be so foolish, isn't his family loaded from oil money?

Maybe part of the answer is that it was quick cash and he saw how/had enough sense to know the kind of profits the school had made off him that he won't even sniff.

Honestly, I don't see the kid as being an NFL star, so why not try and strike while the iron is hot.

Manziels father told ESPN that the NCAA and A&M are making to much money off his unpaid

son. Lets see how the NCAA goes after a rich kid vs defenseless poor kids.

He should be ruled ineligible if it is proven that he did profit off of his autograph.

He's a rich kid who is mad that he wasn't getting cut into the profits. He doesn't need the money but rich people don't like giving and not receiving. Dude is a tool and a diva if AM had any stones they'd send him packing.

They'd have stones, but definitely not brains. I mean the guy did help them become relevant in their first season in the SEC!!!

A&M was almost an after thought in the Big XII, I never thought they could pull off what they did last year in the SEC. Like it or not Johnny Football was a big part of that success, if they want to repeat and build off that he is somebody that will have to help lead the way. Not too many college QB's like that come around often, why run him off if he's your only ticket to championship hopes. Not to mention relevancy.

Like you said he brought them back now he's taking them down, they got what they needed out if him. I believe they got the top QB recruit in the country, AM is on the rise, unless its halted with bowl eligibility.

I hope he is ruled ineligible just to send a message to everyone else.

:lol2: That's a pretty idiotic statement, given the circumstances. Makes them look extremely guilty in this, IMO.

I think that there's a point where his presence has become detrimental to the team as a whole, and if that point has not already been reached, he's coming close by being such a distraction.

Does it matter if he is rich or doesn't have two quarters to rub together?

If Reggie Bush can't profit off of his NCAA popularity to help out his family then Johnny Football shouldn't be able to pad his pockets to party harder. I guess we'll see if being rich does make a difference.

Those NBA Finals tickets sure look awful fishy now.

Does it matter if he is rich or doesn't have two quarters to rub together?

Yes because the question was if he is rich or not which he is. He's rich and greedy.

I hope he's ineligible just so Ole Miss can jump them in the SEC West. I don't feel for him in this case, he knew the rules, not to mention he isn't a guy doing this so his mom or child can eat, he's a rich kid who thinks he's above everyone.

I'm gonna venture a guess that Texas is full of QB's who have the talent to be as good as him and would probably give anything for a chance at having his stardom.

Here's a kid coming in with an 11 minute highlight tape from his Junior year:

These aren't really run of the mill highlights either, and if you look at the big picture, these teams don't look like chumps either (based on what you can see that they have on the field, the size/attendance of their stadiums, the types of fields they're playing on, the uniforms and equipment they have, etc.).

Given the type of offense that Sumlin and company run, the fact that they are now in the SEC, the following they have, and their current popularity, etc. it probably isn't going to be the most difficult sell to find another guy. This might mean pulling a redshirt off of a kid that was expected to develop another year and losing some games they might not have otherwise this year, I'm going to venture a guess that A&M will be alright in the long run.

Just to illustrate, check out this video of their stadium expansion:

I'd always heard about Texas high school football, but when I came down here two years ago, I was still impressed after going to a game. I saw a team that had won 2 games the year before and 3-4 that year playing on a turf field in a place that had facilities that I would compare to Lexington Catholic (if Lex Cath's facilities were on lots of HGH). It was incredible seeing a team who was so bad that had a turf field, indoor field house to practice in, a weight room that looked like the student's (Johnson Center) at UK, etc.

It's just a difference in culture.

Sometime, I'll try to post some of the stadiums where high schools play to give everyone a better idea of what it's like. At home, there's basically the games in Paul Brown once a year and the Trinity-St. X game in Paul Brown stadium, whereas here teams regularly have to play at colleges or huge city stadiums (think the way the Daviess County-Owensboro schools share facilities, only these are like the type of basketball palaces that separate KY from other states).

One of the teams I saw had a back going to Oklahoma, and looked like they had plenty of other players who were going to other colleges, but it seems like every team down here has a kid going to a big time school, and the kid didn't have the type of hoopla surrounding him at the game that I expected (it was like he seemed to be just another really good Texas player that fans apparently saw regularly).

On another note, my observation from being here and talking to others (namely, one of my good friend's whose Dad is a coach here and has a picture in his office of a playoff game they won in the Astrodome, which was one of the first things I noticed when I toured their facilities) about the difference in talent is that Florida has more pure speed, especially at the skill positions, whereas Texas' line play, especially the bulk and depth, is what separates it from the pack.

Finally, another point which didn't really strike me until I moved here was that East Texas (namely Houston) has been flooded with an influx of talent from the Shreveport, New Orleans, and more generally, the Louisiana area(s) following Hurricane Katrina. I've heard a number of people comment on how some of the football programs, through various channels, had scoured the area looking for and getting talented players. Kind of sad and a very cynical way to look at things considering the situation, but it appears to be somewhat of a reality.

Kind of long-winded, but I guess my point could be summarized as: football in Texas is like a weird, cult-type religion, and it's way bigger than any one player. A&M will be able to find an adequate replacement in time, but that may not mean they find someone this year (or that the next guy is necessarily as talented as Manziel). In the end, however, A&M is the only school in a heavily populated state rich in football culture and tradition that can say they are an SEC team, and I think that alone will make them competitive given the current circumstances.

Any word who is going to produce the 30 for 30 film on Manziel's fall from stardom?
