Not to hijack the thread but you're right. It's been really effective but at the same time an example of how ludicrous American politics are given that what the people using that as a pejorative tend to be so mad about is that the liberals aren't liberal enough on the economy.

I don't know who started it, but in my memory I can recall a Saturday Night Live sketch that was called "The Liberal." Maybe early-to-mid 1980's. I don't remember exactly what it was about, but I'm thinking it was about the last liberal on earth. Had a goofy song that is still somewhat in my head too. :lol2:

Whew!! What a thread! I can't believe I missed this debate. So here is what I think I just read over these 9 pages:

 

1. When I read this quote in post #26, "Cruz is simply whacky and not good for the country. Period." , I had a pretty good idea why the thread was 9 pages long. Then when I saw this quote in post #34, "the lens through which I see tells me that there is too much compromising on important issues in Washington" , .... well enough said. But the second quote is just a small snippet taken out of context so I doubt we will ever get an admission that is was actually stated.

 

2. The next time I am looking for an example of stonewalling a political question, I will pull up this thread. Half of the thread is because Mitch Rapp cannot, and I am pretty sure still has not, admitted that Ted Cruz said what he said. He is better than any politician in Washington about talking around a direct question and is more like every politician he despises than he realizes, or will ever admit.

4. On Chris Christie, who I thought this thread was about when I first started reading :lol2:, I like the guy more and more. Here is what I really like about Christie. He isn't beholden to toeing the line. His job is representing the people of his state and he never forgets that. If it is in his consitutents best interest to do or say something that flies directly in the face of his party, he doesn't care. He is going to do what he feels is right for the people he represents. I also like his openness. We could sure use a lot more of that in politics. If I had to vote right now for my choice for President in the next election, Christie is my pick.

I agree that is why I like him as well. But I think the more intelligent way of attack Rand would of been for his actual ideas and not calling out all Libertarian leaning republicans. Some of those people still might vote for him for the very reasons you said you like him. No reason to attack them, attack Rand's ideas.

If you want to win the Republican nomination, you care more about the conservatives than you do about the Libertarians for two reasons. One, the conservatives control the primary results and determine the nominee. Two, Rand Paul is getting all those Libertarian votes.

Libertarian wing of republican is associated with the Tea Party wing. I don't think any Republican canidate is smart to anger that section of the voting population. Again I like Christie I just think it was a bad political move. You can point out errors in Rand's Philosophy without attacking the people who will vote for you. Either way it will not be a factor 2 years from now.

If you want to win the presidency, GOP better put up a candidate who can actually get their conservative base out to vote. McCain and Romney did neither. Romney won the Independent vote -- it didn't help. He didn't get the Conservative base out. Christie will do the same. People will not be excited about him. The GOP needs a candidate that brings both the traditional conservatives and the libertarian leaning republicans to the polls. Very few repubs can do so. Rand is one of them. But first you have to get through the primary.

 

Who will play to the voters in Iowa and New Hampshire? South Carolina? Florida? Texas?

What is so funny is 8 years ago when Bush was president, a Republican that would be considered centrist or toeing the line would be one that went up against the Military Industrial Complex and the party's insistence on violating civil liberties. Those on the left were DYING for some republicans to do so. We now have those Republicans gaining ground and their labeled as radical right-wing libertarian whacko extremists.
