Don't know if name has been mentioned yet but Bryan Wallace to Montgomery County this year, without him they might not make Sweet16 and for sure don't make the final 4 of the state.

Antonio Campbell - Covington Holy Cross. Definitely a player that had a big impact on the Holy Cross program for the past couple years.

Has anyone mentioned Chane Behanon?

I think it'd be interesting to know which teams that won state championships have and haven't benefited from transfers.

The couple that come to mind are Scott Co. with Rick Jones from Corbin and Trinity with Darryl Hicks from Shelby Co.

Just the ones I could name off the top of my head, and very likely not a comprehensive list, but maybe this is not as prevalent as we might have thought (4/14 have transfers).

2 or 3 of the 14 teams probably had multiple impact transfers that were undoubtedly top 3 players on the team (depends on how you count the Johnsons moving back to Holmes).

 

It is probably no coincidence that the two privates that the latter part speaks to ran through most of the tourney like a

buzzsaw, but with that said, you could argue that Jeffersontown (and to a lesser degree, Warren Central), practically did the same.

 

 

I attended three of those tournaments ('01, '04, '06) and watched a great deal of the other online ('12), and looking back, it seemed like those teams winning was a foregone conclusion after each's first "test", but you could argue that the luck of the draw played some part in even those dominating performances:

 

 

'01 - Lexington Catholic playing North Hardin without Andre Woodson (ankle) & getting Tilghman in the finals instead of Mike Bush & Male;

 

'04 - Warren Central smashing Apollo in their opener but still getting taken to the wire by Covington Catholic in the semis;

 

'06 - Jeffersontown's only real danger of losing in the tournament as it played out being a quarterfinal game with AJ Slaughter & Shelby Co;

 

'12 - Trinity squeaking by Ballard in the regional semis (luck probably applies least here as no one else really tested them once they got past Ballard);

Where did Green play as a freshman? I don't think Morones was a transfer, since he was a freshman when they won it. He did transfer away later, I believe.

Also, that should be Lafayette in 2001 and Lex Cath in 2002

 

Also, I believe I remember hearing Anderson transferred in to Warren Central from up north (maybe Wisconsin). I believe he was on their varsity his Sophomore year, so not sure whether or not that was his first year at WC.

 

Did Scott Co. '07 have any transfers? It would be interesting if the school that is probably most maligned for basketball transfers didn't have any on probably their best team ever.

Anderson's came from Wyoming. The oldest one Ryan wasn't on the state championship team I don't believe I could be mistaken. Jeremy, the youngest one started playing varsity in 8th grade I do know that at Warren Central cause him and Richie Farmer I believe are the only two players to score in five state tournaments, maybe even play in five state tournaments.

 

Mason County in 2008 had the Setty brothers who are from Peebles, OH came to Mason County when Trevor was a freshman I believe. Ethan King drove to Mason from a neighboring county everyday but did it for all four years as well so that is probably not a transfer.

Green was what I would more or less term as 'poached' from Bryan Station at some point (developed in their feeder programs and expected to be there and contribute). Don't know if he played varsity at Station or not, but I'd definitely consider him a 'transfer', especially if we're counting people like Anderson who apparently came in from a different state.

 

I'll firmly stand by saying that the Lexington Catholic championship team was assembled (not saying I really care because I'm not really trying to judge transfers if it's for what someone feels is in their best interest).

 

Really don't know of any transfers at Scott County in 2007. Cameron Hundley had a decent role with the team and probably was in the Dunbar district with his older brother (Scott Hundley, who played at PLD & Scott Co. before going to Vanderbilt), but he transferred around the 1999 season, so that's taking it back pretty far.

Going back in time to the early 1980's, Cov Cath got one year from Don Turney who transferred in from ? - lived in NKY but may have started high school in Cincinnati. He later went to Marshall and was drafted in late rounds of NBA draft. I remember him matching up against state championship team from SK with McKinley, Meier, and Dixon.

 

Turney lived in Ft. Mitchell but started at St. X.

Anthony Grundy to Warren Central from Louisville back in 96-97 was a big transfer. That impacted Josh Carrier transfer from Warren East where he started as an 8th grader to Bowling Green for high school after his dad decided not to coach Warren East anymore after all the trouble over Grundy.

These are each close with some corrections.

 

First Grundy. He transferred to Warren Central along with a player named Alan Wallace from Butler County. They had an impact alright, you betcha. Because of the circumstances surrounding their transfers (but especially Wallace which was ludicrous in its violation of the rules), Warren Central basketball was given the death penalty for a year and the entire athletics program was put on probation for three years. It ultimately cost the principal, the AD, and head coach Darel Carrier their jobs. Once they stepped down, the penalty was lightened to merely a single year of probation for the basketball program. Warren Central lost a future Mr. Basketball in Josh Carrier who transferred to Bowling Green. But perhaps the greatest impact of all? The head coach position was given to the only applicant who wanted the job - Tim Riley. Who knew something so bad could lead to something so great.

 

As for the Andersons, they moved to Bowling Green from Wyoming in time for the 2001/2002 season, Ryan Anderson's sophomore year. He played on the first three region championships of Central's run, including the state championship. Jeremy Anderson's first year was as an 8th grader on the 2003 team. He doesn't apply under the criteria here of playing varsity somewhere else first, but obviously he was a big addition to the program.

Don't know, but for the last two years they have lived close to the high school. I have made many deliveries to their house, and had a few conversations with his dad.
