If the Highlands $'s are correct (which I have no reason to doubt) that's about double (actually a little more than double) what Kenton County Schools football coaches make (including the middle school program). Honestly, I'm not sure how many coaches are in it for just the money. Even at almost $10k a year for a head coach, for the time and work they put in, what they make is peanuts.

Only if you compare them to FBS schools and some FCS schools. But compared to small schools, high schools coaching with a teachers salary can be just as much for assistants.

In any case, it isn't a lot of money for all the time they put in etc. Like I said earlier, I doubt very much anyone does it for the money. there are coaches that would line up to have a chance at being a HC for a high school varsity football team, no matter what school it was.

You may want to re-read my post. I wasn't speaking just about the head coach (in fact I specifically said the head coaches salary are pretty close). If you add everything up, the TOTAL coaches salaries in Kenton County is a little over $28,000 (including the middle school salaries). Highlands total was about $61000. Which is a little more than double what Kenton County is paying the full staff.

It is not possible to pay coaches what they are worth.

If you take $10,000.00 that a Head Coach "might" make, divide it over 20 weeks (Preseason and a 15 game season) at 40 hours a week, it would work out to $12.50 an hour.

 

Football is now a year round activity (I would say a minimum of 45 weeks), and coaches put 60 to 70 hours in a week in-season and 15 to 20 in the "off season".

 

Do the math on that & you probably come up with a dollar an hour.

Assistant coaches lose money by coaching. The pay they receive does not cover gas money back and forth to practice.

 

It is all done for the love of the game.

Not comparing apples to apples here. Fort Thomas lists the salary for how many positions they pay (e.g., 5 assistant football coaches). For Kenton County, it only lists what the salary is for each position. What you are missing is the number of coaches that are paid at that position. For example, Dixie on their website lists 1 Head Coach, 3 Assistant Coaches, 4 Coaches, 1 Strength Coach, 1 Defensive Line Coach, 1 Frosh Head Coach, and 1 Frosh Coach. Not exactly sure at what salary level the assistants are getting paid, but that would add up to much more than $28K.

 

There are also several coaches at Highlands, and probably at other schools as well, that do it completely as a volunteer. For the love of the game, the kids, and the program.

 

BTW...any public school in Kentucky, by law, has to make their salary schedules, including extra service pay, part of the public record.

Something else to think about... A lot of head coaches make just as much money on extended days as they do from the base salary.

Is that all??? When you think about how much time these coaches commit to this program, $61K is just a drop in the bucket. No one is getting rich off the program, that's for sure! If you say you wouldn't pay an extra $9K for Dale Mueller to come coach your football team, you are crazy! Just sayin'

Parents/supporters of HHS fund this themselves. I received my letter last week. Between organized parties and donations all transporation is covered.

And don't forget Highlands players have to get to school somehow. Who pays for that? Do they get picked up in limo's since there are no buses.
