Alumni Football Game - Good or Bad Idea?

Featured Replies

I think it is crazy talk.

And Harry, I am not sure I agree with the semi-pro analogy, those guys play an entire season vs. a bunch of weekend warriors. Of course I don't think the semi-pro football is a good idea either.

It's not the same as Semi-pro football, which I agree is also bad idea. At least the semi-pro guys do practice and get into a little bit of shape. I considered playing semi pro football in my late 20's after being asked to play. I showed up, saw how terrible the equipment was, and the motley bunch of characters on the team, who in my opinion, at least half of which were there to specifically hurt someone and I turned around and never have given it another thought. Suffering a serious injury and missing work is not real high on my priority list.

Why wouldn't they play flag football?? Much safer.

There's a film of Kurt Russell throwing a pass to Robin Williams running in my head.

Would you be allowed to wear white cleats? Throw for 6 touchdowns? Be a van specialist?

I thought it was a terrible idea with a ton of risk. Every single person I've heard that went or played said it was amazing! Great atmosphere, lots of fun and big money raised/split. Belfry won like 35-14. Most guys out of shape. I'd like to see Howard run the rock 1 more time!

Agree on the danger of this. However, I'd love to watch other people do this. I have been done for long enough to know that it's over. I am pretty sure my life insurance policy wouldn't cover this. I'd pay good money to see it though and think it'd be a great fundraiser. I'd pay more money to watch adult female powder puff league though?

Supposedly mixed results from the game.

"The Good"

- Huge turnout, great environment, and was supposedly very entertaining.

- Raised a lot of money.

- Some great players showed they still could get the crowd on their feet.In particular former Belfry stand-outs Doug Howard, Matt Maynard, and former SC QB Nathan Moore.

- Former UK player Grayson Smith played in honor of his brother in-law former SC Running Back Ben DeLong (who had passed away).

"The Bad"

- As pointed out, there were injuries. A SC player broke his hip and another younger Cardinal player injured his hip when Thomas Varney stiff armed him.

- SC's main offensive threat was Moore who left the game after a 80 yard TD run with a pulled hamstring.

"The Ugly"

- Blocking supposedly was atrocious and so were Special Teams

- Lots of fumbles.

- Lot of very out of shape individuals HAHA

That is about what I expected.

You know you're old when hip injuries are the majority of injury types lol.

Don't know how Belfry & Sheldon Clark did this, but a lot of these games are organized by an outside company. The company arranges the game, promotes it, takes out insurance, etc., for a cut of the ticket sales. There is very little "skin" in the game for the programs/schools. The same probably can't be said for the "players.":ohbrother:

Last season, FTBIGBIRD joked on this site with me that my team from 30 years ago should play his team from 20 years ago. He opined that we would quickly fill all the ambulances in town. I thought that we would fill all of the hearses in town.

Risky stuff, but if you want to take the risk, go ahead on.
