1st region

Calloway County, Graves County, McCracken county, St. Mary, and Marshall County.

 

Watched them all at Murray yesterday and today.

Calloway was without 2 injured starters and then lost another to injury.

Graves looked solid

McCracken will be the deepest team in the region

St.mary was without a couple of players and struggled

Marshall was not very impressive,

 

2nd region. Hop town looked very good

 

Also saw warren central and they looked solid as well

 

I also watched several first region teams at Murray this weekend. Tilghman got rocked by a Memphis team. They will be rebuilding. McCracken beat that same Memphis team and looked pretty good doing it. They just have too many players right now they are trying to play. When rotation gets tighter they will be really good. Really good guard play. Marshall just doesn't have the horses they have had for the last few years but they will defend and play fundamentally sound. Graves is solid but they miss the two guards that graduated. Calloway was missing too much to get a read but they will be good. Looks like Graves, Calloway and McCracken will start out as the big 3.

One more thing. The first region was a little weak at the top last year. Not so this year in my opinion. Whoever gets out of it this year will be tough to handle. Calloway brings everybody back from region runner-up. Graves returns 3 starters, including leading scorer Puckett, from team that won opening game at state tournament. Marshall and St Mary have what is probably the top 2 players in the region. And if McCracken can mesh they are deepest most talented team. What a fun year coming.

I don't understand the Barren County prediction. They lost five starters off of last years team. It will be an upset if Barren County or Glasgow either make the regional tournament. Monroe County & Allen County are the two favorites in the 15th.

 

Actually, Barren County does return both Billingsley and McCoy who started. Barren went 9 deep against Central in the region tourney and they lose 4 from that 9. They may have an opportunity to start 5 seniors. They will almost certainly have:

 

G - Billingsley - Sr. (Returning Starter)

G - Leftwich - Sr.

F - McCoy - Sr. (Returning Starter)

F - Hubbard - Sr.

 

The last spot is where I'm not certain. Kyle Marr was the only other returning player that saw any time against Warren Central in the region last year. The Trojans have a large junior class, but other than the four above, it doesn't look like they had many players at all that saw playing time on the entire team.

My mistake on barren County, I thought they started five seniors, it was four. I guess that one of them didnt start later in the year, when I seen them early they started Simmons, Poore, Bush & Bunnell, I assume Bunnell was the one that didn't start later in the year. Losing Jacoby Poore and Clay Simmons will be a tall task to replace for Barren County. Coach Cunningham will keep them in most games though and is a great coach.

Agree 100% Also look for each "Team thread" that will be started for each team. I am on the "C" now. Would love to have your input on them.

Apollo returns the best player on their team and one of top players in the State in the class of 2016 Eli Wright. 6'4" left handed wing player. He is legit.

One of my best friends refs in the 2nd region and sees most of the 1st region teams as well and is always giving me to scoop. I need to get him on here to post some.

Calloway will start 4 juniors this year along with a senior. They have all been starting 2-3 years of varsity ball.

Neither Coach knows how to coach a half court game... When the game slows down and it comes down to X's and O's both are generally out coached. Then when they get to the State level when teams do what they do better than them they collapse as well. Neither team has shown me much at the State level in the last few years. BGHS went up to King of the Bluegrass an got embarrassed, but we will see how it plays out this year. My picks out of this part of the State this season are Hopkinsville or Owensboro Appollo, with Barren County being a Dark Horse.

 

When you get matched up with 7th region teams in the tournament (who are generally top 3 in the State) and only lose by a basket (WC twice), I'm not sure what you are expecting other than an upset.

 

If you check the prediction thread from last year, several were predicting a double digit loss by Central to MoCo, yet it did not happen. If Central makes the KOB, don't go expecting to be impressed either. Central hits their stride mid-Janurary; even performed sub-par at the KOB the year they won State over Lofton and Mason Co.

Owensboro returns a solid group of JR's that have been getting varsity minutes the last couple of years....6'5 Justin Miller(who got a Fab Frosh invite if I'm not mistaken),6'6 Aric Holman,5'10 Darion Marrow,5'9 Airious Phillips,& 6'0 Dylan Sanford. Basketball talent in the Owensboro area (9th district) is on an upswing. Apollo has Eli Wright,Hunter Shelton,& the Seargent kid. Owensboro Catholic(region runner ups) return close to their whole team. Ed Carter,Ray Zuberer,,Ryan Clark,& Cameron Obryan among others. Daviess Co. losses Logan Obryan but has 1700 kids to choose from. They should have some talent too....
