High School Ball in Southern/Western Kentucky

Featured Replies

There is a lot of great basketball being played in Southern and Western Kentucky that is very rarely talked about. Who do you all think will be the teams to beat in this area of the State... This list below are a few of the teams that I feel will be able to compete at the State level but there are a few more that could also have made the list. What are your thoughts?

Owensboro Apollo

Hopkinsville

Bowling Green High School

Warren Central

Christian County

Graves Co brought the house this year to the state tourney. I was surprised they had so many there. They did well against Ohio Co but fell to Hop-Town. I look for Hop-Town top be back again this year. I really enjoyed watching them play. What can you tell us about that part of the state, as I/we don't see many of those team play and would like to know more about them.

I just want to say, we need more posters like you to bring these teams into the discussion! Would love it if you could spread the word, as well as post more about the schools in the area. I try to follow Grayson Co. But I rarely get to see any of their games.

Agree R-Mom. :thumb:

1st Region

Favorite - Calloway County - Return all 5 starters off region runner up team.

In the Mix - Graves County, Paducah Tilghman, Marshall County and possibly the new school, McCracken County.

2nd Region

Favorite - Henderson County - won the Eddie Ford Spring Classic with a school team, lost to Hopkinsville by 1 in the region last year.

In the Mix - Hopkinsville, one of these two will win it and if the two 6'9 surprises are rumored to be true Hopkinsville is #1.

Caldwell County gets Elijah Sindelar back out who averaged 19.6 as a freshman, didnt play as a sophomore will be a junior this year, they will make some noise but not a chance at region.

3rd Region

Favorite- Apollo (Up for grabs though, just my opinion)

In the Mix - Owensboro, Muhlenburg (if Jordan Terry is back in Muhlenburg from Atlanta, move them to #1), Butler County, Ohio County, Breckinridge County

4th Region

Favorite - Warren Central (Good enough to win the state championship with the right draw)

In the Mix - Bowling Green, Warren East, Monroe County

I was going to post the same thought.

1st region

Calloway County, Graves County, McCracken county, St. Mary, and Marshall County.

Watched them all at Murray yesterday and today.

Calloway was without 2 injured starters and then lost another to injury.

Graves looked solid

McCracken will be the deepest team in the region

St.mary was without a couple of players and struggled

Marshall was not very impressive,

2nd region. Hop town looked very good

Also saw warren central and they looked solid as well

Bowling Green is the only team I see challenging Warren Central in the 4th Region. They are actually built for a run much better this year than they were last year.

I agree with Heat Check on the draw playing a part in WC's chances at the state level should they be fortunate enough to make it that far. The 4th Region in general is due for a good draw.

I agree that Bowling Green is best suited to Challenge Warren Central at this point but neither team seems to have overwhelmingly spectacular coaching, so don't be surprised if programs like Russell County, Warren East, Barren County, or a couple more challenge them in this Region. It was a cake walk by no means for them to win the Region last year and they have lost A LOT of Senior leadership.

I dis-agree with this statement. I don't know Bowling Green personally, but Warren Central has very good coaching. Coach Unseld is a very good coach, has been to back 2 back regional championships and won 1 in two years at the helm. I have seen them practice numerous occasions, he is tough on them but very detailed to skill development and gets the most out of his players.

I agree Warren Central & Bowling Green are the top two, there isn't a 3. Warren East lost Brandon Walker to a broken hand with a week left in the season, had he been healthy last year it would have been interesting to see how it played out considering they were the #1 seed in the district and beat Central both times they played last year. Walker will be back this year but East does lose some key seniors and also a sophomore has a scholarship offer from Urban Meyer at Ohio State and may not play basketball which will hurt. I think Monroe County is the best team outside of Warren County this year, Clinton County not far behind as they have the best player outside of Warren County in junior point guard Keifer Dalton. I believe Dalton plays with the Travelers 16u team this summer, was with magic but believe he switched.

I can't roll with you on the coaching statement. A lot of people believe the talent does it all. I've seen great teams fail because of poor coaching and vice versa. Coach Unseld has led Warren Central to the finals in both years, winning this one. Last year ended a string of five straight region finals for Bowling Green under Coach Sherrill. Sherill has the highest winning percentage of any BG coach back to at least the 60's. Coach Unseld is off to the best start of any Warren Central coach. They're not hacks.

As to the run in region last year, Russell County, no, that was no cake walk. The game against Franklin-Simpson was and it took the most unconscious shooting display in the last 4 minutes I've ever seen by Barren County to close that game. Central led comfortably from the middle of the second quarter until Barren County realized they couldn't miss a three pointer late. Barren County held the ball with the chance to tie or take the lead precisely zero times in the second half of that game.

I'm also not in the business of trying to diminish the contributions of Warren Central's seniors, but while they lose six of them, only the two starters they lose (Walker and Dickerson) were significant contributors. Tallent provided a nice body type to sub in and Green could eat some minutes. Riley and Price were not on the floor very often. Walker and Dickerson were go to perimeter threats, but I have faith that players will be available to step into those roles. The Dragons will be a better team in 2013/2014 than they were the last.

Neither Coach knows how to coach a half court game... When the game slows down and it comes down to X's and O's both are generally out coached. Then when they get to the State level when teams do what they do better than them they collapse as well. Neither team has shown me much at the State level in the last few years. BGHS went up to King of the Bluegrass an got embarrassed, but we will see how it plays out this year. My picks out of this part of the State this season are Hopkinsville or Owensboro Appollo, with Barren County being a Dark Horse.

Agree to disagree. I'll bookmark this thread so that I can have the crow ready for one of us when the time comes. I don't mind admitting when I'm wrong. On your predictions - Hoptown most definitely. Apollo I'm not so sure. I really liked them at the beginning of the year but they seemed to regress heavily as it wore on. Barren County, well, you have to make it out of the region to be a dark horse.

I find it strange your first post identifies both BG and WC as teams that will compete on the state level. It really doesn't feel like you feel that way.

I don't understand the Barren County prediction. They lost five starters off of last years team. It will be an upset if Barren County or Glasgow either make the regional tournament. Monroe County & Allen County are the two favorites in the 15th.
