Southeast Christian Church Cuts Ties with Boy Scouts

Louisville's largest church casts out Boy Scouts - WDRB 41 Louisville - News, Weather, Sports Community

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville largest church is cutting ties with the Boy Scouts.

It comes just days after the national organization decided to drop its ban on gay youth.

Leaders from Southeast Christian Church said they will not renew their charter with Troop 212.

Pastor Tim Hester said the church did not desire to get caught up in the new direction of the Boy Scouts. Troop 212 and Cub Scout Pack 212 have until the end of the year to relocate.

Local leaders with the Boy Scouts' Lincoln Heritage Council say they're looking for a new organization to charter.

Barry Oxley, Scout Executive/CEO of the Lincoln Heritage Council, BSA, responded in part:

"Southeast Christian Church's decision to no longer be a chartered partner is not a new development. Southeast Christian Church notified the Lincoln Heritage Council earlier this year that Scouting would no longer be offered on their campus in 2014.

"We can't speak for Southeast Christian Church on why they decided to no longer sponsor Pack and Troop 212. Our focus is helping youth grow into young people of character and integrity through a program of fun and adventure."

While I disagree with it I do love the beauty of choice.

Lots of churches across the nation have dropped their support of troops... Sad, but hard to blame them. Maybe the gay and lesbian community will pick up their support for the troops that are now unfunded because of their efforts..

Nope, they'll just whine that it's happening and call everyone homophobic.

I just drove past this church on Sunday on my way to a volleyball tourney and the only way to describe it is FREAKING HUGE. It is the largest church I have ever seen.

I believe it's literally the biggest church in the state.

No church needs to be that big. It's a social event.

We're going to be seeing a lot of this type of thing, from both sides.

Honestly, Six Flags over Jesus has been planing to cut ties, and in my opinion the fact that the BSA is open to all religions and not just Christianity has as much to do with it as anything.

Actually, in the past they haven't even been too friendly with other Christian churches. As I recall there was a sermon a few years ago that inspired some anti-Catholic vandalism.

Fifth-largest in the US. I believe Osteen's "church" is the largest, at 44K members.

Not meaning to threadjack but could you unpack that a little Cammando. I'm hard pressed to find churches not supporting troops and their families. By support, what do you mean?

Mostly financial support...

Not sure of too many churches that have such benevolence in their budgets. If you have miltary families in your congregation in financial need and requests are made then I can see many churches using their benevolence funds in such a way but I don't know of any in my experience that have a line item for troops and families only.
