Ron Jaworski: Chip Kelly’s Oregon offense won’t work in the NFL

Featured Replies

New Eagles coach Chip Kelly has said he can adjust his style and run a different system in the NFL than he ran at Oregon. Former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski says he’ll have to.

Jaworski, who analyzes film in his work with ESPN, said on 97.5 The Fanatic that Kelly, who has no NFL experience at all, is much more likely to adjust his offense to the realities of the NFL than to revolutionize the NFL by bringing his spread offense to the next level.

“It’s going to be interesting to see if this style of offense projects to the NFL,” Jaworski said, via Phillymag.com. “I’m going to say no.”

Jaworski says there are fundamental differences between the way Oregon could exploit weaker defenses in college and the way an NFL defense would attack an offense like Kelly’s.

Do you agree with Jaws?

I think he is right. Every college team has several players that are not pure studs and those guys can be exploited. In the NFL, well all of those guys are Pro Caliber...much harder to exploit.

And the guys running the offense are all pro caliber. I think it would work but it would take a different approach to the qb position. I feel you would have about three running type qb's and rotate them.

Seems like that would explain Tebow's success passing in college and lack of success passing in the NFL. Didn't Florida run a type of spread of offense with Tebow?

Their offense helped Tebow but so did having the best skill players in the SEC.

Once again I'm sticking with the opinion that NFL talking heads are fooled by old cliches and the singled mindedness NFL offensive minds used to have. Oregon's run game was so dominant in college that his offense never had to progress in the passing game. Screens, quicks, and play action passes were enough.

With the infinite time NFL defenses have to prepare for Phill's offense, don't you think he'll develop an NFL style passing attack? Rubbish. If Kelly doesn't work in the NFL it will because of his own stubbornness.

The speed that Oregon used to attack was the real Chip Kelly philosophy. They were at the line and 100% ready to run a play as soon as the ball was placed a majority of the time. If he is able to use that pace with NFL level talent then you have a system that changes the NFL. With Kelly it has very little to do with the "spread" outside of getting back to the line is easier with a bunch of really fast and athletic guys at every position...

His schemes are innovative too. It wasn't just that he ran inside and outside zone, but also played with blocking schemes a lot. The best answer to the zone read for college teams was to use a scrape exchange. You couldn't always do that against Chip Kelly. His insane tempo was added after he got to Oregon though he used multiple tempos when he got there.

To me, he's much more than just a tempo guy, though that obviously became his biggest advantage at Oregon.

Some of his zone read stuff was somewhat unique at first, then others copied. When he started to "read" the 1 tech DT people took notice, then he really went a little further by reading the NG (0 Tech). Not a lot of coaches had the guts to leave interior lineman unblocked when running the ball from the shotgun at the high D1 level.

I keep coming back to the fact that...he never got it all the way done in the NCAA, he ran into a big strong physical team and got beat....Auburn, Stanford, etc.... I think the presence of the Defensive lineman you have in the pro's and the ability to run so many types of defense and coverages...will make him have to change some if not cause him to be back in College in about 5 years.

How is Kelly's Offensive different from say the Patriots when they go hurry up? Granted, the Pats don't go hurry up all the time, but when they do, it is very effective. I believe running more plays is an effective way to attack a defense. Don't give the defense time to read formations, just go straight at them every time. The only problem I see with this offense , is scoring too quickly.

The Pats have been meeting with Kelly for the last few years. What Kelly will do more than likely is close to what you see with NE with a bit of a twist to it. Even NE getting the two TE/H back types and moving them around is a Kelly thing. Kelly plays with blocking surfaces a lot. I would be surprised to see much of the zone read stuff and little to no option/pitch stuff.

Kelly's offense was very run heavy. It was closer to what the Bengals ran in 1988, w/ the exception that it was even faster. I can't imagine playing like that the whole game. Even at it's best, your defense will be on the field 35+ minutes a game. That's not conducive to post season success.
