I have some getting-to-the-point-of-annoying birds that have shown an awful lot of persistence in their efforts to build a nest atop my motion detector light on the back porch. I have been equally persistent in clearing their efforts away for the past several days, but have noticed that they have gotten somewhat wise and are picking up the debris I swept off the porch the previous day and reusing it.

 

Of course, it's a fire hazard, and I'd rather avoid drastic measures such as killing them if I can help it. I don't have the time to spend every day out there, should they triple their efforts in spite of me, however, and my patience only goes so far when it comes to dumb animals. Will they eventually stop? How do I discourage them from continuing their efforts in that particular spot? They can go just about anywhere else under my porch, for all I care. Just not there. Hell, there's even an old nest among the rafters from before I moved in. Why won't they use that one?

Try putting a black rubber snake up there, it sometimes works really well in keeping them away from particular areas.

Hide a sonic or ultra-sonic bird repellent near the light fixture. Because you are protecting a relatively small area, a low-range device should be sufficient.

I'm having a problem with birds on my front deck that are constantly flying up

and down my glass sliding doors. I bought a fake owl that makes noise but they've

gotten used to it and are still around making a mess on my deck.

Any Ideas the rubber snake thing might work but its a large deck with 2 big sliding doors?

You've gotta be careful with that...you have the potential to kill everything in your yard that way.

I have had a Cardinal flying into my patio door all winter/spring long. Just when we thought he was gone has has started going at my front door.

It's ridiculous and the bird will do this at the front door forever and then move

around back. I read online about hanging up cd's or tin plates also heard to hang

up wind chimes.

I've had what I assume to be the same bird building a nest on my light fixture above my walk-out basement door which I only use to bring firewood in. In the last couple of years I took the light bulb out and she had no where to build the nest (single spot light). This year by the time I realized it she had the whole nest built so I just taped the light switch where it couldn't be turned on and I'm letting mother nature enjoy.

 

We had the fake owls here at work and after the birds got used to them they were actually sitting on their head, which was quite funny. I never thought of the snake though.

In all seriousness, we bought our house a couple of years ago and it has an inground pool. The people we bought it from planted pine trees around half of it. Aside from the pine needles constantly dropping into it birds nest in the trees and constantly crap on my patio and in the pool. We've tried snakes and the owl. The owl doesn't work worth a poop. The only thing we've found that works is knocking down the nest. However like your bird, some will try to rebuild. They do eventually give up.

This reminded me of a funny story. Last year at work I had a dove try to build a next on my truck where my hood ends under the windshield wiper. I would knock it off and an hour later there it was back. One day I knocked it off at least 4 times. I finally had to wait by the front door and when it came back to re-build I shot it with a rubber band. I park right by the door so it was only about 15 foot away. The bird was fine but it didn't come back.
