Baseball vs Spring Football Practice

Featured Replies

Absolutely. :thumb: Wish I had been talented enough to play all 3 throughout HS.

Me too, although I enjoyed the one that I could play. My sons all played at least two and one played three his Frosh and Senior years. We decided early that it would not be feasable, but going into his senior year I told him enjoy it and play anything he wanted.

Baseball -vs- Spring Football practice won't really affect the Freshmen and Sophomores, as much as the Juniors and Seniors who are considering or going to be considered for athletic scholarships in college.

Some players that get some attention after their Sophomore campaign on the gridiron, will plan some Football camps to attend and it can cause some problems for them, if they play Baseball and likewise the same if they are being touted for Baseball, it can affect Basketball as well.

I would like to see Baseball get the same opportunity, in the Fall, IF both Football and Basketball get their allotted times out of season.... :thumb:

What happens when his ace pitcher breaks his arm in a spring football drill?

Nathan Bray didnt play football :D;)

Working together my friend is the key, as you mentioned and hopefully it happens at every school.

As for the Baseball not being left out for year round, here is my question:

Football - gets spring practice, school facilities, equipment and coaches.

Basketball - gets summer camps, school facilities, equipment and coaches.

Baseball - are the coaches allowed to use the school facilities, equipment and coaches out of season like Football and Basketball?....

We are allowed to access the football fieldhouse so we can use the batting cages that are inside to hit. We are also able to pitch inside the fieldhouse.

Somerset has been a school, that has excelled in all 3 sports over the years and I'm sure the cooperation from each head coach, is key to getting this done.

If more schools can work together, communicate and understand the best interest of the student-athlete is the priority and not their individual sport....Baseball, spring Football and summer Football can co-exist to the benefit of ALL..... :thumb:

What about Fall Baseball Legion leagues? I know that in the Ashland area there are several Fall leagues that encourage kids to play baseball instead of football during the fall.

What about the summer legion leagues? I know on several occasions that football teams in this area didn't have their full team until a week before the first game due to all-star teams, legion baseball tournaments, and other summer leagues for baseball. Is that fair?

Is it fair for a football team to start practice July 15th and not have 8 to 10 players until the first of August due to all star and legion baseball teams? I think not. 10 practices in spring is not going to hurt kids all that much. If it's that big of a problem, most baseball coaches will not let their kids attend spring practice.

AAU basketball plays almost year round, and has kept many kids from playing baseball and football.

This is from a sports fans and more importantly, Baseball....

Spring and early Summer is for Baseball, should remain that way and that is what's wrong with a lot of sports in the KHSAA....Football and Basketball seasons allow for practice during Baseball and these sports are becoming almost year round....which force players to choose in some cases.

PLAY the sport in season and let the "out of season", schedule around.... :thumb:

:thumb: Well said and I agree 100%.

The school system is in the process of setting up an indoor baseball facility that will be equipped with pitching machines, batting cages, pitchers mounds, and alot more for the baseball AND softball team to use. This project should be completed by the start of the baseball season. This will take away from the problem of more than one sports accessing the facilitys of another sport

The difference being, that your summer, fall, AAU and Legion teams CAN NOT be coached by a coach, on that High School staff and the school, nor the KHSAA has no control over the schedules of these programs.

My point on using the High School facilities, for Baseball during the summer, was in more reference to ByLaw 25.6, which if I understand correctly, does NOT allow a summer team to use the facilities, if a majority of the teams players are from that school.

Is this the understanding of others, who have read that ByLaw and if so, why does Baseball not get the same privileges that Football and Basketball does, to use the school facilities?

Although that is true, I can guarantee that most of the H.S. coaches know exactly what's going on in those legion games. Many of the teams in this area are made up of players from one particular school. I think the H.S. coaches have more input into what is going on than you think. Isn't it ironic that the H.S. coaches are in the stands at most games AND practices. I know many of the coaches of these legion and AAU teams work very closely with the H.S. staffs. There are a lot of H.S. baseball coaches out there that tell their kids that if they don't play summer and fall legion ball that it will hurt their chances to start on the varsity team in the spring.

I think working together is the best way to approach all of this, however some schools are not to the point where the baseball, football, and basketball coaches work together. Unfortunately it just hurts the kids in the long run. Every coach now a days thinks that their star player is going to be D1 material, when the truth is that some are barely good enough to play NAIA. Let the kids play everything.

Sorry Pal... I've seen you shoot a few hoops....:)

You are right most work together but they should not be observing practice or attending games, but that is another thread....

Cooperation is required to accommodate Baseball and Football, but the ultimate choice should be made by the player, in his best interest and not coerced.

Baseball is the most conflicting sport to football it keeps them out of the weightroom, out of speed work, out of spring ball and out of summer 7on7 and other practices. Baseball coaches usually are not very willing to work with the football coaches either not always but most times.

I would love to see football players do football only year around but working together is the best situation for the kids and the programs in a highschool setting.

...the reason any conflict exists with Football during the spring, is that it's Baseball season.....it would be no different, if Baseball was allotted 10 days right in the middle of Football, to practice but they aren't.

Most good Baseball programs, incorporate weightlifting, speed drills into their conditioning but not the heavy power-lifting.

...What does ByLaw 25 apply to and more specifically the Case Law at 25-6...regarding "cannots"

...the High School career goes by quickly and never look back and say..."If only I would have played...."

I hear you, but on the other hand I also hear the kid who says "I only wish I had taken (insert sport here) more seriously. I may have gotten a scholarship to college if I had concentrated on one sport. I love that sport the best and wish I had decidicated myself to the the best dang (insert sport here) that I could have been".

Personally I see no particular benefit to a kid to having played 3 sports vs. just concentrating on just one. As long as the kid is involved in sports, any sport, I think he is benefitting. While multi sports may have been the way it was "back in the day" for some/most of you, I only played one sport and was/am fine with it. I do think the kids need to make the decision and the coaches need to stay out of it however.
