April 1, 201313 yr Author Tubby Smith is coming to Texas Tech to try to turn around another wayward program. A person with knowledge of the deal says Texas Tech agreed to terms Monday with Smith on a contract to be its next coach. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement has not been made. Smith takes over for interim coach Chris Walker, who went 11-20 this season and just 3-15 in Big 12 play. The program is still reeling from Billy Gillispie's volatile one-year tenure, which ended when he resigned in September. Smith was fired by Minnesota last week after six seasons. He led them to three NCAA tournaments and this year delivered the program's first tourney win -- over sixth-seeded UCLA -- since 1997. Texas Tech Red Raiders reportedly hires Tubby Smith - ESPN
April 1, 201313 yr Congratulations Orlando/Mr.Tubby Smith... I didn't figure it would take Tubby very long to get back at it.
April 1, 201313 yr Love it. Congrats Tubby, I guess I'll be cheering for the Red Raiders to have success now.
April 2, 201313 yr Tech must have a thing for ex UK coaches. BCG, OTS and Leach. I want to see Tubby sporting a stetson.
April 2, 201313 yr I wish Tubby all the best. Tubby Smith is a very, very good basketball coach along with one of the finer human beings in coaching. Smith is a class act and deserves the best. GO TTU Red Raider basketball !! (unless you play U.K.) Edited April 2, 201313 yr by oldrambler
April 2, 201313 yr Still trying to figure out why Minnesota fired him. I heard that one thing was Minnesota has new people in administration I believe that he had "run ins" with administration over having poor basketball facilities and Tubby was wanting improvements. The mens basketball team were having to share practice time in the basketball facility (The Barn) with the Ladys basketball team along with some workouts with the Minnesota Hockey team. I believe that Ice Hockey and Football gets most of the funds, basketball is down their priority list. Also, I was listening to the Tim Brando show and he said that the A.D. was "sure" that he was going to get S. Smart (VCU) and then Smart turned them down. So, if they fired Tubby bc they were "so sure" that they could get S. Smart and then got turned down then imo that's hilarious.
April 2, 201313 yr Minnesota is not exactly a drop whatever your doing job; I just can't see letting Tubby (like him or not) go and probably downgrading your program. Personally I would have wanted something for sure from Coach Smart before making this move.
