March 29, 201313 yr At some point people that own pit bulls need to be held responsible instead of just the dogs being put to sleep. What kind of people have 5 people in the house and assign the 12 year old to watch the 2 year old? Are you kidding me? Euthanize them not the dogs. Edited March 29, 201313 yr by PurplePride92

Your words increase my desire for responsible gun owners to be able to always be allowed to enjoy the 2nd amendment.
March 29, 201313 yr This is so sad. Even if someone neglected their duty of watching the child, she would probably not have died if they didn't have the pit bulls. This is a very dangerous breed, I know some will disagree, but this is a perfect example of their aggressiveness. I have dogs of various breeds (none are pit bulls) and none of them would do something like this. And as Mountain Ref said, "and people think guns are dangerous"?
March 29, 201313 yr "It's unclear why the dogs became agressive"? Maybe because they were likely attached to a chain 24/7. I agree the parents should be punished.
March 29, 201313 yr The breed in its self isn't dangerous. Ppl inbreed them to make them more aggressive; not to mention people train them to be aggressive. Misunderstood breed of dogs. However it's hard to find one that hasn't been abused/bred for fighting.

However it's hard to find one that hasn't been abused/bred for fighting. I keep hearing that the breed itself isn't dangerous but thats not true. Studies show that the breed is very dangerous. Pit bulls have a much higher rate of unprovoked attacks than any other breed. And they have an extremely high rate of attacks involving children. The inbreds and trained attack pit bulls are not the only type of pit bulls that attack and kill. They are dangerous and I definitely wouldn't want them running around in my neighborhood. If I had to walk down an alley of felons or an alley of pit bulls, I'd take the felons.

However it's hard to find one that hasn't been abused/bred for fighting. Absolutely agree. It's all about how the dog is trained from pup to adult. I know three pitbulls, and they are the best behaved dog that I know(besides Traceygirl and Gypsy, of course). However, I would never get a Pit as a pet, simply because they are to high energy and too strong. I would be worried about letting them play with children, because they might knock them over or something.

Pitbulls are more likely to be aggressive because the redneck/hoodrats raise them that way.

Because if you haven't noticed, dogs are VERY territorial animals. ThrillVille has it exactly right, it's how these breeds are raised that makes them dangerous. Much like how children are raised by their parents can make them more susceptible to violence.

We'll never know what the dogs were running or feeling and we'll never know the actions of the toddler. Punish the parents.
March 29, 201313 yr Sorry, one of my best friends has a pit bull, and it is an extremely gentle, friendly and caring dog, and a supreme protector, to the point that if there are three people in one room and one person in another, it will get uptight if it can't herd that one person in with the rest. That dog is a good one because my buddy trained it properly, to not be overly aggressive, to not instantly attack that which it does not know or trust. That dog would be different if it were not well-trained. In this particular case, I would be perfectly happy to see the owners up for murder charges. They deserve as much for hording dogs that they either deliberately trained to be aggressive, or didn't bother with training at all. Either way, the owners bear responsibility for being bad owners.
March 29, 201313 yr I don't understand how/why there were five people in the house at the tme of the incident but a 12 year old was supposed to watch his grandmother and the girl. What were the others doing? Why was the girl "already cold" when EMS got there?
March 29, 201313 yr It's impossible to prove if this attack is unprovoked. We'll never know what the dogs were running or feeling and we'll never know the actions of the toddler. Punish the parents. I have three labs and a bird dog. I have a two year old grandchild. I would never even think about leaving her in a room alone with the dogs. I do not like to see Pits to be unfairly discriminated against, and I have worked with many (100's) of Pits. To own more than one, an owner has to take many things into consideration: 1) they are a powerful breed; 2) like any breed individuals will have different characteristics; 3) an owner must know if there dog is high energy, medium, etc.; and 4) like ANY breed they have predatory insticts and are stimulated by movement, noise and other high energy. Not taking these points into consideration is a formula for disaster. What is interesting is that there are other breeds that share many of these characteristics (German Shephards for one), but you seldom hear of people owning 5 German Shephards and letting them interact in a pack. Maybe I am wrong about that. BTW I agree with PP92 on his point.
