February 15, 20179 yr In the US, the "large retriever" population - comprised mostly of the Labrador, Golden, and Chesapeake Bay breeds - is estimated around 5.5 million. The "bully breeds" - including the Cane Corso, Dogo Argentinos, Rottweiler, Rhodesian Ridgeback, American Staffordshire, and mixed-pit breed - account for a dog population of about 3.6 million in the US. There are an estimated 69.9 million dogs in the US, so that puts retriever breeds at about 7.9% of the total dog population in the US, and the bully breeds at about 5.6% of the dog population in the US. There ARE hundreds of thousands, and likely millions of pit bulls that are incredibly gentle and wonderful dogs all of their lives, and never would hurt a fly. That doesn't change the fact that they in the most recent study (2014), bully breeds still accounted for 75% of all fatal dog attacks in the US. Additionally, 48% of the dogs involved in those attacks were identified as family pets. Why aren't we hearing about all of the fatal attacks by large retrievers if there are almost 2 million more of them in the country? So this is why some folks tend to Profile bully breeds as dangerous?
February 15, 20179 yr So this is why some folks tend to Profile bully breeds as dangerous? Of course. Powerful breeds and individuals within that populace that are "high-energy" individuals and shouldn't be owned and maintained by people who are not equipped to train and manage them. Additionally, these breeds are the breed-du joir of those who want to have a dog that scares people. You seldom hear of people with packs of German Shephards or Mastiffs although their bite pressure is considerably stronger than that of a Pit, and Shephards are recruited in law enforcement and the military because they have less bite inhibition than other breeds.
