Ron Dawn is the new coach at Newport Central Catholic

Featured Replies

If Brannen is lucky, Coach Sturgeon will stay at WV. He knows all the players, has coached them on the way up and they respond to his style. The only problem is I hear from those in the know that his name is on the short list for a number of local head coaching jobs.

If Brannen is smart, he will bring new blood with him. If Trame was the problem then Sturgeon was part of it. Brannen needs a clean slate with new faces. Also, I find it hard to believe that Sturgeon is on the short list for a number of local head coaching jobs. Just saying.....

Ron Dawn, such a tired, old answer............really? He's what you want?

I would venture to guess that if we took a poll, you my friend would be the only person to say no.

I had the pleasure to meet Coach Dawn and his wife last summer and you could not meet 2 finer people. Congrats to Coach Dawn and NCC

Guilty by association is NOT the case here.

Talk to the parents (who you all say are terrible) and the players and you'll find out Sturgeon is the only guy they wanted to replace Dan. The Moeves move would be a moot point had he been named HC.

He's been successful at all levels he's coached and I get it from VERY reliable sources Trame even said he should be his replacement when he resigned. Dan resigned he WAS NOT fired.

So don't judge by mere association!

AND as far a short lists, I guess we both will have to sit and watch huh ?

NC finally made it official today.

I never said Trame was fired. Don't know where you came up with that but it wasn't from me. He resigned!!

True. He was at NewCath for a long time though before taking over. I believe that Wa Wa means that NewCath will never hire a "new" coach. They'll either be alums, or on the current staff.

With the track record there, why would you look outside? It seems to be working pretty well IMO.

I agree. If it aein't broke...

Maybe you need to attend Coach Collopy's class!!

The Big "C" (Carl Foster for non-Thoroughbreds) is old school. I was congratulating him on his choice of Dan Wagner as Head Footbal Coach, when he told me he has never held interviews for the Coaching positions of Football, Baseball or Basketball. Bob Schneider was there his entire tenure as Principal the 1st time. When John Gross left, he offered the job to Gary Schulte, when Schulte left it went to Krebs, when Krebs left it went to Ron Dawn. He retired as Principal during Dawn to Detzal transition. He returns to Principal and has to pick both Football and Basketball immediately. He told me, " I knew who deserved the job, I simply ask do you want it". My guess is the same thing occurred again with Ron Dawn.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COACH RON DAWN TO RETURN AS

NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC

BOYS' BASKETBALL COACH

Newport Central Catholic High School named Ron Dawn as its new head coach for the Boys' Basketball Program. Ron will replace Coach Grant Brannen who accepted a teaching and coaching position at Walton Verona High School.

Dawn, a 1974 graduate of Newport Catholic and standout basketball player began his coaching career at NCC with the boys basketball program in 1980. He was named the NCC boys head coach in 1990. After a five year break to follow his son's college basketball career, he resumed coaching duties at NCC. He was named the girls' head coach in 2009, a post he held for four seasons.

Coach Dawn is the only coach in the state to win an All "A" State Championship in both boys and girls basketball. Additionally, he is the only 9th Region Coach to win a regional title for both the boys and girls. Coach Dawn has over 400 career victories.

NCC Principal Carl Foster was quoted as saying, "Ron Dawn has had a tremendous impact on NCC. From being a Hall of Fame player and coach, to a great teacher, a mentor to student athletes and younger coaches, he has always handled himself with class. He is respected by his players, colleagues, and opposing coaches. He has accomplished things that no other coach in the state of Kentucky has accomplished. His love for the game and devotion to NCC basketball is commendable. We are fortunate to have Ron on the sidelines again."

NCC Athletic Director added, "As much as we hated to see Coach Brannen leave NCC, we are very fortunate that Ron Dawn has accepted the opportunity to become head coach. Ron's record speaks for itself. He is a fantastic coach and mentor and we feel honored that he will continue the great tradition that is NCC Basketball."

Ron Dawn commented, "I am really looking forward to coaching this group of young men. We will work hard and do our best to keep the longstanding tradition of NewCath basketball going strong."

Seeing Ron Dawn play in 1974 is one of my earlier memories of watching high school ball.

1974 region tourney was at Conner. I was 10. The game that stands out is NCC/Holmes when a fight broke out between a Holmes player on the bench and a fan in the stands. Happened right in front of me.

Crazy.

No knock on talent, just old and tired answer! New blood brings new things.

All new things aren't necessarily good and all old things aren't necessarily bad. I think in this case the old is proven beyond a doubt.
