Alan Mullins won’t be returning for an eighth season as Ryle boys’ basketball coach after he said he was asked to step down on Tuesday.

Mullins, who was the starting point guard on Simon Kenton’s 1981 state championship team, compiled a 94-105 record in seven seasons and led the Raiders to the Ninth Region Tournament in four of the last five seasons, including this past season. His best season came in 2010-11 when the Raiders finished 20-13 and advanced to the regional semifinals.

Mullins, who played college football at Western Kentucky University, said he has no plans on returning to coaching anytime soon and wants to expand his work with at-risk students. He is a psychologist in the Boone County Schools system.

“I’m taking myself in different directions,” said Mullins. “My son (Tate) graduated last year and I want to continue to spend time with him and devote more time to helping with at-risk youth. It’s things I’ve done every summer, I just want to expand it further and put more time into it.”

He said he doesn’t define his tenure at Ryle completely in terms of wins or losses.

“That’s how things are measured, but the bigger picture thing is I’m reminded on a regular basis of the kids that have come through here and call me back and ask my advice and give me thanks for all the life lessons,” said Mullins. “That goes further than anything anyone can say to me good or bad. It’s a reminder I’ve done things the right way.”

The most popular person in the bench is the 2nd in command. Trust me every assistant is loved when players aren't happy with the head coach. Don't know everything about Ryle but its a big school and needs someone with head coaching experience.

Atleast Mike Flynn called in his Sr's and next year's group coming back to tell them. That speaks volumes about his relationship with his team. JMO

 

Heard Mullins wouldn't even look at the kids when they turned in their uniforms and sent a pretty sarcastic email to the parents of the kids who didn't turn their uniforms in on time. This is the best move for both parties.

I wish Alan well. Always a pleasure to talk to, even though I was from a rival school.

Why in the world would Mike Code want to leave Brossart for Ryle?

 

Not sure if it was him or Scott that was being mentioned... Code was just the last name I got with the other two.

Erik Goetz - Holy Cross

Mike Code - Bishop Brossart

Rod Snapp - Newport

It's a shame that there are so many opening in NKY because I know that Cooper is going to probably lose one of the best assistants in Brett Blevins. Dude can coach, motivate and has the respect of alot of people. Gonna hate to see him go but respect him enough to say he's earned a HC gig. If Ryle gets him he will turn them around real quick!! Rod Snapp is another one that would thrive at any of the openings, not sure about WV as I don't know their situation but anyone that can create a winning program at Newport with all it's challenges would have to get a strong look as well, another motivator that gets his players to buy-in to what he's selling.

Forgot about Ryan Bowman at Conner...definetly a possibility.

 

I think Ryan, Blevins, and Ross Hart of Holmes are all three guys that could easily be head coaches and have success.

 

I don't see Hart leaving Holmes but I wouldn't rule out Blevins or Bowman for Ryle.

I'm a big fan of Brett Blevins. Great coach that relates well to the kids to get the most out of them but an even better dude off the court. I've had some interesting conversations with him. Very down to earth.

Is Blevins a teacher? Might be the thing that holds him back.
