IF Kentucky were to NOT make the NCAA tourney, should they take an NIT bid?

Featured Replies

This is where I stand also.

I really can't think of one reason why UK should accept an NIT bid. It isn't arrogance. What is the benefit for UK and its players? Can someone tell me why UK should play in the NIT?

If it isn't arrogance then what is it? What are you also telling your players? As I said I doubt the players will say oh well we didn't make it, we don't want to get to play anymore games now. We don't want to get this bad taste out of our mouths, we don't want to try to show some improvement to scouts. Now if the players don't want to then fine, however I doubt that is the case. So if Coach Cal and the university decide to not accept it if they don't make the big dance, then that is wrong and would not be fair to the players either. Every other team always accepts the invite, so if UK does not how is it not being arrogant? There is really no good reasons not to accept, unless the players themselves say they don't want to.

Goodwin, Poythress, Harrow, and WCS are all gone. I guess I forgot Polson and Hood.

Where is Harrow going? Transfer?

^ A couple of weeks ago Matt Jones stated that WCS & Poythress would return. He then said Goodwin & Nerlens go pro & that Harrow would not be on the team next year. He didn't elaborate on Harrow though.

With Jones, you have to take things with a grain of salt. He's sometimes dead-on & sometimes as far off as one could be.

Yes Thomas More.................................:jump:

I feel the need to chime in hear regarding the players leaving. If any of these "fools" think they are good enough right now to play in the NBA then whomever is telling them so is a complete idiot. There is not one player on this years team (including Noel) that is ready to play in the NBA. Cauley-Stein is at least 2 years away, Poythress could not even play in the NBDL, Harrow needs 2 more years as he is a weakling. Goodwin would be the closest to ready IMO and he still has many issues with shot selection and ability to handle the basketball. This group could not even carry the bags of the last few one and done players that Cal has brought to Kentucky.

These guys declaring for the NBA draft has nothing to do with being NBA ready. They get drafted on potential. Sometimes a lot to lose by coming back.

In this case playing time...

I just looked at several NBA mock drafts. Poythress and Goodwin are solidly in the top 15. Cauley-Stine still in the first round when mentioned.

UK gains nothing except risk of injury to several players who will be drafted. The money isn't worth it. The team will be completely different next season so they gain nothing for next year. I just don't see any value in it for this UK program.

I don't like going to the NIT but yes I believe they will if it comes to that. #1. reason = $$$ to the program/school. #2. U.K. imo would be looked down upon should they be invited and decline. All the so called experts say that the ncaa doesn't take things like that in consideration but it is imo that they would. A decline might cost U.K. in some other ncaa considerations down the road.

BTW, Welcome to bgp Cowboy!

I really disagree on Noel, no doubt even with the injury he is a top 5 pick. As far as the others (Goodwin, Poythress, WCS) the NBA now drafts on "potential" so imo they will go and be drafted.

There are a lot of teams who may not gain anything from being in the NIT. I am sure we see plenty of teams who are in the NIT who have a bunch of seniors, but that does not mean they don't accept it since it does not help them for next year. Playing in the NIT can not hurt anything, now not playing in the NIT could hurt things. Shows the players that the university doesn't really care for them if they don't succeed, it shows that UK thinks they are bigger than the NIT and better than every other team who has taken the NIT invites. Paints a bad reputation for the university for doing that. There is no reason at all not to accept it, unless the players come out and say they don't want to play in it. That is the only possible scenario that there should be for turning it down.

I remember this question on the pregame show a couple weeks ago and Oscar said they should play in the NIT if for no other reason than to try and add wins as Kansas is closing the gap this year in overall wins in school history. Of course, the way this group plays they could easily lose the first game anyway.

I also think it shows arrogance not to play.

There is no point in UK going to the NIT. Turn it down and call it a season.

This is an easy question to answer. Just suck up your pride and play the game.

Why should this uninspired UK team accept an invite to go play one more game of uninspired basketball?
