IF Kentucky were to NOT make the NCAA tourney, should they take an NIT bid?

Featured Replies

I started this mainly to hear what people think about UK being in the NIT.

Positives would be home games I am sure.

Negative would be is it a slap in the face after bring NCAA champions last year?

What benefit is it to get extra games with players not playing for you next season?

Would this group show less motivation to play than they have shown this year?

I say no.

My reasoning is that many teams use these games to get extra practice, experience, etc. so they can build off it towards next season, but in Kentucky's case these guys aren't going to be there next season, so no reason to prolong the end.

Yes for sure. It is arrogant and classless not too IMO. If that is what we qualify for then absolutely.

I am 100% with this POV. Many of the guys on this years team will either be gone or get little to no playing time next year.

I disagree. If it provided some sort of benefit, I'd say they should play, but nothing beneficial would come of it since no one (other than Wiltjer) will be back next season.

I remember people saying this during Billy G's last year here. I really don't get why anyone would think they shouldn't go to the NIT if they miss the big dance. Yes we are UK, but that does not mean UK is to good for the NIT when basically every team would go to the NIT if they are invited. I don't know why people would even think that they shouldn't. No wonder why people hate UK fans because it is very arrogant and classless to think UK shouldn't go to the NIT if they don't make the big dance.

I kind of lean towards this process. I think it is bad not to accept................At the same time with this group I wonder about their motivation.................

It's not something I would look forward to & I think you guys are pretty spot-on as far as guys not coming back. I think one of the three freshmen will be back--either WCS or Poythress--but I wouldn't be at all surprised if each of them left.

Having said that, I do see arrogance in not accepting an NIT bid, as Original Rookie says below. So I would accept the bid, albeit with a lot of kicking & screaming.

I could see a number of guys coming back.

Yes, they should accept.

But, as a twist and just for fun, should only start guys that have come off the bench all season.

I was trying to research who has turned NIT bids down in recent years. Have not found that but found this twist on things........

In 1970, Marquette was ranked eighth in the nation in the final poll, but they were placed in an unfavorable bracket in the NCAA Tournament. In protest, coach Al McGuire turned down the bid -- and played in (and won)the NIT instead.

I say no.

Even though it is not the big dance, I bet these guys still would want to play. I see no way that the players would say hey lets just call it a season, we don't want to play anymore games. Now if that happened then that really shows how bad the players competitive instincts really are, which are already questioned with this team. However even with this team I don't see them doing that. So unless the players say they don't want to play, then there is no reason for Coach Cal or the university to say well we get nothing out of this for next years team, so no thanks.

I would imagine there are financial benefits to going, no matter how minor they may be.

People talk about this like it is a realistic option when I think only one team ever has done it.... and it was a Bobby Knight team. I certainly don't want to keep that sort of company.

I could see a number of guys coming back.

Goodwin, Poythress, Harrow, and WCS are all gone. I guess I forgot Polson and Hood.

WCS could be back IMO.
