For our younger members, you do realize Clinton wasn't the first President right? Not a knock on anyone at all, but we should all acknowledge the existence of life before us. A Mr. Basketball and a future starter on a Final Four NCAA tournament team are good places to start.

 

I honestly can't name five off the top of my head. I will say Barton and Foster are awfully hard to leave off a list as they are two of the better athletes if not in NKY history, certainly of their era. I thought Thacker went to Grant, but if he was at Holmes, I'd include him with the above.

 

My no brainers in the the five would be

Beal

Jennings

Schoelmer

 

not sure how you leave any of these off. Keep in mind, Jennings made a lot of money playing pro ball, it just wasn't in the NBA. He was really good.

 

Others I'd consider from that era are Walton and Wimzie. They wouldn't make the list, but I'd consider them.

I hear ya, but with all due respect, I think a team with Beal, Schloemer, Jennings, and then pick any two out of Wimzie, Phil Davis, Mike Moore, Leo Foster, etc. would score. 78 team put up almost 80 a game, 1980 team put up 85 a game.... Two completely different styles across the eras, and I know its an academic discussion about who would win.... About this I am certain, though, you would never have seen the teams in the late 70s early 80s in a 32-29 regional final.

 

....and those numbers are before the 3 point line existed.

But, Its amazing to see how many of these players played together on the same team. Beal, Wimzy & Schlomer vs Pittman, R. Johnson & J.Johnson would make a great 3 on 3 game.

Jack is still the best I saw. I saw him break Dickie's scoring record with 68 points. Amazing touch with the basketball. He and Alphonso Pouncy where a great inside outside pair.

As for the early 90's team, they had to be the deepest team. They have 10 guys that would all score over 10 points a game. C. Pouncy lead the charge with Hughes, Eilers, both Hayes, Jerry marshall, dwight campbell, antoine Brown, Drazen Katinic...I have to get my yearbook out to remember all of them. That lose to Fairdale in the state final really hurt. I can only image how the folks felt that saw the Scholmer shot at the buzzer.

 

And if you ever saw Cleste Hill play, you would have to agree she could have started on any Holmes boy team. Have to give her props for the hall of fame induction. She deserves it.

Very true. They could probably hold Jennings to about 50 maybe 45.

Gentleman Jack was a freight-train that many would choose to just get the hell out of the way and with good reason. Guy was a prolific scorer that was impossible to stop.

The '90 team was sick. I remember our practices prior to playing them. Coach had ten of us defend our starters to simulate their press. We had a nice team and they took us to the shed.

 

I can still remember Jennings dunk attempt, I believe it was their second round game vs eventual champion Ballard. I swear the ball almost hit the Freedom Hall ceiling. I believe Jennings scored 80 points in two games that tournament.

I remember that 1989 Bellevue win over NCC up on the Hill vividly. LOL

 

Then we had to face the Bulldog press in the finals. That not accurate, Newport lost to Holmes in their 1st round game. We lost to Holmes in finals and went onto the Region where we faced eventual Region champ Scott in the first round. We actually played horribly as did Scott and I believe we lost like 69-56 or something. Too much Chris Haynes.

 

I think Holy Cross knocked off Holmes in the Region that year and the Tourney was at Holmes.

We played Jack in Districts my JR yr and I had to front him in a zone the entire night. The guy had great feet, a knack for putting the ball in the hole. We held him to 29 that night 6 pts below his avg.
