Not that any of these would be locks in the top 5, but sure is fun walking down memory lane and thinking about some of the best I saw play and played with.

 

We must be about the same age. I remember many of these guys from the Kenton County Boys Club. Bubbles and Danny Green worked there. Mr. Hurst coached a couple of Boys Clubs teams.

 

I grew up in Peaselburg, went to Cov. Cath. but always liked the Holmes guys on and off the court. I would add May May ?? (I don't recall his given name) with the group from this era.

I played for Coach Hurst. Remember a tourney at Cov turners we were getting jobbed in and coach getting fired up at the refs and Corky getting into a fight with some good ole turner's boys up on the track. Good times.

I remember that 1989 Bellevue win over NCC up on the Hill vividly. LOL

 

Then we had to face the Bulldog press in the finals. That not accurate, Newport lost to Holmes in their 1st round game. We lost to Holmes in finals and went onto the Region where we faced eventual Region champ Scott in the first round. We actually played horribly as did Scott and I believe we lost like 69-56 or something. Too much Chris Haynes.

 

I think Holy Cross knocked off Holmes in the Region that year and the Tourney was at Holmes.

 

I remember going to Bellevue in 1991 as a naive 10 year old. NewCath had Brannen and Steve P, and there was no way anyone could beat them. My Dad just laughed when I told him that. I remember very clearly him saying just watch Holmes warm up. That was when I realized that the world was round and there were other schools besides NewCath. Watching Holmes dunk and shoot during warmups would have been worth admission. They were unreal. I didn't remember the score, but I knew that it was a whooping. They were awesome.

I hear ya, but with all due respect, I think a team with Beal, Schloemer, Jennings, and then pick any two out of Wimzie, Phil Davis, Mike Moore, Leo Foster, etc. would score. 78 team put up almost 80 a game, 1980 team put up 85 a game.... Two completely different styles across the eras, and I know its an academic discussion about who would win.... About this I am certain, though, you would never have seen the teams in the late 70s early 80s in a 32-29 regional final.

 

Say what you will but the 32-29 regional winners are the only team to win a state title if I'm not mistaken......that being said, I'll go with

 

Beal, Schloemer, Jennings, Johnson and I like Henderson..........then Hill, Pouncy (Pittman is better now than then)

Mae Mae was so quick, but so little. I remember thinking he was the most "exciting" player I'd ever seen, quick and fancy with the ball.... until Dicky Beal and Phil Davis showed up.....

Yeah, sorry if this thread veered off course... Guppy is Tommy Gullett... good player, a legend down at "the Hole" in Covington, graduated about 85 or 86. Fozzie Bear played about the same time, Steve ?, a little behind me. I would say those names were put out there in much the same vein as Phil Glaze....
