I forgot about this one! Spillman got the steal and the bucket that they thought was for the win and celebrated while Walt Allen ran the court and make the layup at the buzzer! Great game!

This is always the game I think of. It was do thrilling. I remember walking out and my wife saying "that was the best game I've ever seen"

I spoke with a guy once who was there and he said "it was quiet, almost still, for like a second, then the roof just blew off the arena."

 

Is that a fair representation? I would love to have seen it (unfortunately I was only six months old when it happened)!

 

Eight years old at the time, sat in the lower arena and that's how I remember it.

The '88 Ballard/Clay County championship was a treat. The performance of Barbour and ETown on Saturday was quite impressive. Henry Clay/Carlisle County was David vs Goliath even though David had a set of 6'8" brothers. Most of my tournament memories are from '81 - '94, one day I hope to take in the entire tournament again.

 

Some of my favorite names are: Jimbo Binkley ('85 Hoptown) and Dax Myhand ('94 Marshall County)

AGREED!! Greatest basketball display I have seen in 20+ years of Sweet 16 games.

Holmes/Central 2009 Championship game.

 

 

Christian County/Rowan County 2011 championship game.

Another one in that vein of thought is the 2003 opener between St. Henry and Mason County when the big kid from St. Henry went down.

 

Mike Schmidt (easy name to remember). He was out for several minutes and it changed the course of the game.

 

A wise person told me the day before the game that it would be a war. Mason County was heavily favored but he said that the St. Henry nucleus had been playing together since they were in diapers and that they would give the Royals all they could handle and then some, and that it would be their toughest game in the tournament.

 

The Cru beat us three times by a total of eight points so I wasn't their biggest fan but that loss to Mason hurt me.

My family, originally from Paintsville, has a lot of stories from that State Tournament.

I was only ten years old when this game was played but if I'm not mistaken my dad and I listened to this game on radio. Lots of static but was still a great game to listen to..CCH was loaded with talent..Noll, Voskuhl, VonLehman, Fritz, Topmiller, Derkson, Burger, Kreimborg were just some of the names that I remember from that era of some excellent CCH teams..It seems as though CCH was a bit "snakebitten" in the late 60s and fell just short in a few state tourneys during that period in time when they may have had the best talent in the state.

 

Wasn't there an Overmann or two on that team or was it a later CCH team? Grew up just down the street from Joe Voskuhl., was an idol in the neighborhood. He had a brother, Kenny, who was a heck of a player in our neighborhood but don't think he went to CCH. As a matter of fact, I don't think he ever played ball for a high school.

Without question.... Clay co vs Ballard in Freedom Hall. Farmer va. Future NBA player Allan Houston.

 

Farmer put up 51 I believe. Houston was much taller and Farmee would back him down and shoot a high arching shot that just kept dropping.

 

Best performance I have ever seen by far.

Holmes 1980 Quarters: Holmes 97 Ashland 92. Back and forth high scoring affair. Late into the night on Friday. Holmes was spent and got throttled the next day by eventual champ Owensboro. Wish the new format was in place then. Holmes got back to their rooms about 2am and had to play again at 11:30. Dicky Beal's senior season. This was back in the day when kids could shoot as evidenced by the score without the 3-point line.

 

This was my as well the game went into Double OT I think.

:thumb:Yes there were some Overmans on the CCH teams of the late 60s. Excellent players. TOG would be much better with the names and years that all of these guys played. He was a student at CCH during that era.

Rowan vs Christian Co Championship game for me.

The 1988 semi's when Clay beat PRP to advance to the finals. 5'10 Russell Chadwell driving base line and dunking left handed over 2 prp players. Final was I think 92-90. Game took so much out of Clay that it prolly cost them back to back state titles
