When it comes to coach Trame and his style of coaching I have heard all the same things that kids just don't like to play for him. The thing is these days kids have way more options then the varsity team when it comes to sports, and it sounds like some decided to use them options, sad really.

 

These are the kind if kids that are in for a rude awakening one day when they have a boss they may not like but have bills to pay.

Coach Trame reminds me of Tubby Smith....off the court & as a teacher you will never find a more well liked, class act kind of guy. But on the court just an old school, stubborn set in ways, no freedom control every cut, pass, shot style of basketball. Once heard it described as he coached as if he had an X-box controller on every kid on the sideline.

 

Like Tubby he hated the AAU system...and almost seemed to favor the less-skilled role players over the AAU system talent type kids.

 

Think as a coach you must maximize/develop individual talent then each year adjust/tweak your system to match that talent. Coach trame believed the opposite ....many times trying to put square pegs in round holes.

 

A group of kids who were gym rats/ loved the game....ended up dreading even going to practice. Because of this kids wanted out & some have already moved to other schools even some of walton's best Jr. High kids. More of top kids wanted out this year.

 

Coach Trame is a class act....but the tubby smith/bobby knight complete control style of basketball is a thing of the past. Its why tubby & bobby couldn't get top recruits....basically why top talent was leaving WV.

I greatly admire and respect Dan Trame as a man, educator, and coach. I certainly would not want his job. I may not always agree with him but I certainly respect him and his abilities.

 

If Dan made the decision to step down, then you can bet he had good reason to do so and it was what he thought was best. Speculating on why he did is disrespectful to Dan, Walton Verona, and the players. I’ve never known any Trame to back down from a challenge of any kind.

I remember several years ago in the youth AAU circles all you heard about was Walton this and Walton that. They were building a powerhouse program. They are no closer today than they were 5-6 years ago. Just a bunch of parents making noise.

My guess is if the family chooses to switch they will move closer to the school they choose.

I didn't like my baseball coach at NewCath (early 80's) all that much, but the life lesson's I learned through his "style" are still with me to this day. You accept the "style" and play to the best of your ability within that style.

 

Parents back then would look at their kid and say, "toughin' up"!! Kids and parents today try to dictate way too much.

 

I agree my freshman coach rode me so hard at the time I thought I hated him, as I got older and look back I learned the most from him. These days kids don't stick anything out.

Check out how many 6'2 white kids are playing D-1 ball, who can't jump over the Sunday paper. Very few. For all their grade school success, they won't play higher than D III at TMC. Nothing wrong with that. But, when mom and dad realize that by Johnny's sophomore year that Coach is not fulfilling their dream for Johnny, it gets ugly. You're freaking Walton, KY! You don't grow D I players! Live with it.

Way to crush a kids dream. It's people like you that do propel and motivate those kids who do play college ball. For being such a small area, I would say NKY has an okay rate for sending kids to play D2, and NAIA ball. Occasionally, there is a d1 player.

I said nothing is wrong with DIII ball. It's the unrealistic expectation of a college basketball scholarship by the parents that cause them to complain bitterly about coaching and drive good coaches away.
