It was 1955. Fleming County and Tollesboro advanced from the 39th District. Tollesboro eliminated both St. Patrick and Maysville. Fleming County eliminated Mays Lick and Orangeburg.

While I'm a fan of all basketball it will certainly be different going to the

Region tournament without a true rooting interest. I'm going to adopt Augusta & Bracken

for the boys tournament next week.

Mason County formed in the fall of 1960 by the consolidation of: Orangeburg “Tigers”, Mayslick “Cardinals”, Minerva “Maroons”

 

That goes along with some information I found on this board: Old area Elementary Schools? - Maysville BBS. That thread is talking about those schools as elementaries, but in my experience, the elementary schools formed from old high schools tend to maintain the nickname of the former high school.

Some of my family members played basketball for the Mayslick Cardinals. Hope this doesn't mean I'm getting old.

I would think the information would also be contained in Danny Weddle's book - "The Way We Play The Game", a history of basketball in Mason County.

High school notebook: Tiny Augusta gives Clooney's school a basketball boost

 

George Clooney is still the most famous Augusta basketball player in school history, but Brent Bach is probably the Panthers' most revered player after what he and his teammates pulled off on Tuesday night.

Bach had 31 points to lead little ol' Augusta to a stunning 72-61 victory over host Mason County in the 39th District semifinals. It was Augusta's first win over Mason County in 29 tries, and kept the Royals out of the 10th Region Tournament for the first time in 16 years.

Augusta has only about 100 students in its high school compared to Mason County's 800. Augusta has been to the state tournament once, in 1926, and hasn't won a district title since 1981. Mason County has won 14 region titles and two Sweet Sixteen championships (2003 and 2008).

"That's what makes this kind of like Hoosiers," Augusta Coach Jason Hinson said. "It's unbelievable."

I think mine came from a store in downtown Maysville my wife was in, Merle Normans- has a bunch of girly stuff. :) Probably other stores there have it also. Safest bet would probably be at WFTM radio station. Pretty sure they have it .

Going by the names given in that elementary school thread I posted:

 

Washington Pioneers -Blue and White

Sardis Dragons- Maroon and White

 

But there's not telling if that was the same as their high schools. I assume it would be. They don't appear to have been part of the consolidation. If they were, they weren't playing basketball because they're nowhere in any records I can find.
