No, you are trying to read too much into it, I said "ALL" as the article said the school was predominantly Hispanic. It doesn't matter how many Hispanics are in a school, they are in the US, the chant should be OK!

Funny how Hispanic relatives of mine has the same opinion of this as I do, They don't see a problem with it, and they HATE those who are here illegally as well.

 

Funny, it kind of reminds me of Lou Dobbs, I think that's who the CNN host was, some politician up in the northeast claimed Dobbs was racist because of his views on immigration, funny thing was Dobbs wife was Hispanic.

My assumption is that this school does not chant "USA" at all their games but at this game against what I read is high school with a large population of children not born in the US or are first generation born in the US and the chant to give the notion that the Hispanic kids are "less than American". I would say such action is inappropriate.

 

Saying that, if my assumption is incorrect, and they chant it at every game (which I doubt) then I take back my assertion.

If that is the case with this school then I have no problem with it but since there was not mention of this team being so patriot at games leading up to this, it sounds like more like jabbing at immigrants.

But this is an American high school that has a predominately Hispanic student body, not a foreign school. It's xenophobic (the school also said "Arizona, Arizona" is also chanted at them, presumably because of the harsh immigration law there),but the implication of them chanting this at Hispanic Americans is that USA = white. That's a race based assumption.

I agree! The chant is either offensive or not, which is it? If it is offensive then no one should be allowed to chant it anywhere, anytime! The principal even said it would be different if we played a team from another country, why is that? I would figure it would be worse.

 

On BGP there are comments against women, EKY and the people there, West Virginia and the people there, Ohio and the people there, but that is okay to single them out?

 

If they are truely American, reguardless of if they were born in another country or fist generation here, or whatever, they too should be proud of the chant.

 

When I coach my team in Europe I have heard chants of "Ro-ma-ni-a", Yes, it's directed at our team, and me, but both teams are from Romania. I don't see me or my team crying racist, I just laugh it off.

There aren't many things worse IMO than telling an American that they're not American or "American enough."

 

Unless this student body chants this at every single game then that is exactly what these kids are saying. You're not American. You're lesser than us. We're better than you simply because we're white. Add in the report that they also changed "Arizona" and then you have a complete picture of the intent of the cheer. They're not being patriotic. They are ridiculing fellow Americans for nothing that those people have done wrong. They're ridiculing them because of their skin color and heritage. It's no different than yelling "wetback" or "spic." The intent is exactly the same.
