Why are NCC basketball players not playing football?

Featured Replies

Can someone please lock this thread, this is a joke. NCC won the All A state title and they are getting rings just like everyone other participating team would have gotten. Year in and year out you see alot of the same schools in both the All A and the Sweet 16. Dont sit here and act like the All A isnt something special because it damn sure is. Everyone knows its not a KHSAA sanctioned event. WHO CARES!!!!! Same as 2A football, no school has a say in what division they are in, you beat the teams you have to beat to become STATE CHAMPS. NCC did this twice this year in both sports. Nothing said on this site can diminish what these kids accomplished this year.

No one diminished anything NCC accomplished. What has happened in this thread is several NCC supporters are upset because it was pointed out to them that calling this a state championship is factually incorrect. So in response the bleeding hearts have tried to turn this into members somehow disrespecting and/or diminishing the accomplishments of the NCC kids in order to stop the fact check and have the thread closed.

It doesn't work that way here at BGP...

Can someone explain to me why they care so much if it's called a "state championship" or not? What's the big deal? Why are we trying to diminish the accomplishments of a bunch of high school kids?

It is a battle of two opinions... No one wins in an opinion war so I'd agree with Millertime. What you're seeing is two sides that won't budge either way. As someone referenced to earlier, if they consider it a State championship by their standards, by all means let them. My opinion is definitely with UKMustangFan. As far as I know though Guru, this topic is about NCC basketball players playing football, so I'd also suggest to you to suggest for these people to take this argument about this "All A State Championship" into another thread. Especially since this is in the "KY Football (High School)" section.

Thanks for the suggestion blueandgold. Sometimes threads just morph and this is one of those sometimes.

And for the record, it is not battle of two opinions, it is fact, and the side that doesn't have fact on their side wants to make it a battle of opinions.

Sweet 16 is a licensing issue and I have heard, don't know for the sure, even the NCAA pays them for use of the term Sweet 16.

I think if the All A Classic used the term State Championship as a title it would be "frowned upon" for lack of better words by the KHSAA because it is not a state championship and referring to it as such would give the appearance that it is a KHSAA sanctioned state championship.

Wanna bet? The KHSAA loves the All-A because it keeps the classification discussion of the sacred Sweet Sixteen on the back burner. If the All-A people decide for some reason to cease the tournament the discussion heats back up. Right now the KHSAA gets the money and glory of the Sweet 16 and the All-A tourneys (they have them in other sports) help keep the small schools from pushing for classification in sports other than football and track. I don't think the KHSAA gives a potootie of what it is called as long as it serves its purpose.

This is another separate issue and I agree the KHSAA loves it because it keeps the class discussion to a minimum, the rest is purely speculation on your part.

I think NCC had their sights set on winning the 9th region. That was their real goal. At least I think it was. Is the All A ring a consolation prize? Would they have bought the All A ring if they won the 9th region? I have enough respect for their program to think winning the 9th region should be their goal every year. I wouldn't put much emphasis on the All A. I could be wrong, but IMO, most players could care less about winning that All A thing.

The point of my post is, yes NCC Kids feel the pressure to give something up if you want to be any type of player on the NCC Team...open gyms have been around for years, Mexi if you did not attend due to participating in another sport, was that held over your head regarding playing time, making the team, etc back in the day? This leads to players such as Zach Pangallo not playing football. Would also be nice to have McDonald, Schulte, & Josh V. playing on the gridiron as well. Not sure if the later 3 have the physical toughness to get it done, but sure would be nice to see them give it a shot. Playing football would also improve their physical play in basketball.

It does not take a "premier coach" to figure out the inside outside game. Anyone with limited basketball knowledge could figure that out with the size of this lineup!

McDonald, Schulte, and Josh V don't WANT to play football!

You don't know as much as you think you know. You obviously are not from a small school.

I saw a post in another thread about high school athletes that don't have a real chance to play college basketball, should play other sports. I thought it was an excellent comment. It seems NCC has this problem and has been a problem over the last few years. I've watched the NCC varsity basketball team play a few times. They have some kids that could be serious studs in football and possibly play on the next level, but really have no chance at playing college basketball. IMO, their is only one basketball prospect on that team, jake Shultz or something like that, not sure on the last name. They had a kid a few years ago, jake geisler, he could have played on Sundays......now I hear he is trying to walk on at NKU.

Where are these kids getting their advice from, guess that's my question. They need to realize, NKU isn't taking 5'9" players anymore. You better be better or as good as the sophomore from Holmes.

First I apologize that I just now am getting into this thread and probably am repeating things that are said later in the thread, but I'm not reading 11 pages to sort them out. I will just give my opinion.

--First of all, I believe you KNOW how the SCHULTE kid spells his name. Anybody who has watched the team a few times has to know this, so this is just a tactic to make people think you don't have a vested interest in the football program. A coach maybe?

--If you think he is the only player player on that team with a chance to play at the next level you know ABSOLUTLY nothing about the game. McDonald will play D1 for sure. Weyer will play at the next level as will probably Bueter and Seibert if they want to. Pangallo also has a chance. He is just a sophomore you know. So your statement discredits about anything else you have to say.

--Your statement says if basketball players aren't going to play in college they should play OTHER SPORTS, then you zero in on then playing football. I believe FIVE basketball players were on the very successful golf team this fall. And if your reference is to McDonald, which it obviously is, he has a MUCH better opportunity to play golf in college than football. Also, Colin Dupont has accepted a VERY nice scholarship to play golf at Marian in Indiana, so it looks like that paid off for him. Several others played on the soccer team and a number of them will play baseball. So They DO play other sports, just not the one YOU want them to play.

--Geisler did play football as you well know. The kid just liked basketball better so that's why he chose basketball in college. Is that a problem? I don't know why you even brought him into the discussion to begin with as he did play football.

--Finally,the football team AND basketball team won state titles in their classes this year, the golf team was very successful, soccer is going well and baseball has been as good as anyone the last few years. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM. There are about 95% of schools in the state that would love to have the "PROBLEM" you perceive NCC has.

So it looks like whoever these kids are getting their advice are doing a very good job.

Thank heavens they aren't getting it from you.

Since it is not sanctioned by the KHSAA I assume they would run into a problem if they called it a state championship which is probably why they call it the All A Classic.

I finally checked in on this thread to see what the heck could extend this discussion through 11 pages. Bottom line is the bold above. Until it is sanctioned as a state championship by the KHSAA, it isn't a KY state championship - it is a tournament championship. A very coveted championship but the rings should say All A Champs or something similar to be accurate.

It is not sanctioned by the KHSAA, but it is a state championship - the All 'A' Classic state championship. Argue the merits if you will, but my daughter's golf team at Villa won the state title in 2007 and a banner hangs in the gym that says "2007 All A Classic State Champions." Doesn't diminish anything and it doesn't supercede what anyone accomplishes at the KHSAA all-school level.

The intent of my post is not to imply that Grant is a bad coach, but I'm not buying the small school excuse on this one. Compare the talent NCC has had over the past few years and it exceeds that of the large majority of the bigger schools in the region.

Maybe, just maybe, that talent is good because the coaches at NCC develop that talent better than other coaches. Coaching is more than just games, it is primarily what you do in practice.

That doesn't count, c'mon. That's like being the prettiest girl at an ugly girl camp.

Anyone gonna remember who won an all A championship. It's like winning any other tourney. I mean, great job, but it's not a state championship.

It sure as hell counts as any CLASS state title in any sport. What is the difference?

Maybe that could be the case. Did you bother to read the post I was replying to?
