Do you feel the following suspensions are justified for what happened, taking into consideration age.

 

Yesterday we reported on the five-year-old in Massachusetts who faces suspension for building a small toy gun out of lego bricks and play-shooting his classmates.

 

Earlier this week, we reported on an incident that erupted when a discussion between two children about a toy nerf gun caused a lockdown and a massive armed police response at two elementary schools in the Bronx.

 

Another incident this month saw a five-year-old girl suspended after a three hour grilling, and described as a “terroristic threat”, when she brought a pink bubble gun to school.

 

Last week, a South Philadelphia elementary student was searched in front of classmates and threatened with arrest after she mistakenly brought a “paper gun” to school.

 

A 6-year-old boy was suspended from his elementary school in Maryland for making a gun gesture with his hand and saying “pow”.

 

Days later another two 6-year-olds in Maryland were suspended for pointing their fingers into gun shapes while playing “cops and robbers” with each other.

 

In Oklahoma, a five-year-old boy was also recently suspended for making a gun gesture with his hand.

You and I don't agree on too many things, but this we are seeing the same thing, It's too much! I wish someone in DC, I don't care which side of the isle, would take a stand and make a huge fuss about it, and hopefully people will come their senses! Yes! We need to protect the kids, but this is harmless play by kids. I feel the same way about little kids who may kiss at recess or anywhere else in school, there have been a few kids suspended and said to have sexually assulted the other, when it was no where near that at all. People need to loosen up!

Agreed, my kid plays army and cops/robbers at recess at school with other kids. He is around those ages also. I think this punishment of suspension and police interrogation can have an emotional effect on a little kid. Who knows what it may do to them later in life.

Too often we major in the minors and minor in the majors.

I was fortunate enough to finish with perfect attendance from 1st grade through high school, an achievement I am immensely proud of. There's not a chance in the world I'd have made it by today's rules. I'd have been suspended so many times in grade school for nonsense like this. And that's ridiculous.

 

And if I were a parent of a child subjected to something like this, it would take every ounce of my being not to throttle the people responsible.

Daniel McClaine, Jr., a freshman at Poston Butte High School in Tan Valley, Arizona, made the mistake of setting a picture of a gun as the desktop background on his school-issued computer.

 

The picture shows an AK-47 lying on a flag, reports KNXV-TV. The gun isn’t his, McClaine assured the ABC affiliate in Phoenix. He found it on the Internet and liked it, partly because he is interested in serving in the military after graduation.

 

A teacher reportedly ratted McClaine out after noticing the Soviet-era rifle on the computer. McClaine originally received a three-day suspension.

 

After McClaine’s father contacted the local press, Florence Unified School District officials suddenly decided that the younger McClaine could return to school on Monday.

I wonder if anyone wants to tell the reporter that non-automatic Kalashnikovs are still made and sold today. And are popular at gun shows.

 

Their style and utility did not die with the Soviet Union. But it is a heavy rifle compared to the AR.

Yes huge overkill, my son was not allowed to complete an art project one time due to the fact that is depicted him shooting a deer, another time he could not do a science test that involved him shooting his 22 rifle with his dad to test bullet penetration in different wood. Instead he done the old baking soda volcano....silly.

Suppose the teacher did nothing and let him keep his desktop picture and one month later he uses that gun to kill classmates. Is it still overreaction to be proactive in the teacher and school's case?

Yes. A wallpaper picture on a computer isn't going to shoot you nor does it show intent to do so.

Yesterday, Boyd County schools were dismissed for snow. I let my 14y.o. take his Mossberg 28ga over/under and our English Pointer and German Shorthair Pointer along with his youth pastor and another friend who is in his youth group at church to a local game preserve. I paid for the quail that they released. They harvested 23 out of the 25 quail, brought them home, cooked them, ate them, then he went downstairs and cleaned his shotgun before placing it back in the gunsafe. That is my definition of kids and gun control.

While I get your point, I think it would take more than one random picture to show you the inside of someone's mind. Being against school rules to have the picture is another story for me, one I support the school in. Just so long as he'd get the same reaction from the school if he had a picture of a muscle car or something for the computer wallpaper.
