I agree with this from what I could see. It's a shame the ref didn't get a double foul called as they were bumping and pushing just after the ball was thrown in and just before they started toward top of key. A strong whistle with a double foul and a discussion with players and coaches would have stopped it all.

 

I watched this on the video and the refs were not looking at Frederick and Wallace. Once Frederick passed the ball away, the ref up top followed the ball. The ref under the basket was focused on underneath play. The other ref was on the complete other side of the court. The action between Frederick/Wallace was not seen till it was too late. So none of the refs saw anything till the wrestling began and that is when they blew the whistle. My question would be, what should the ref up top at the hash closest to the incident be watching? Should he be on the ball on the far side of the court or watching off the ball?

Watched the video several times, What a disgrace that a fight of that magnitude happens in high school basketball. i wonder if anyone from the KHSAA will even review the video and the circumstances that led to the bench clearing brawl. The players ejected will serve a minimum of a 2 game suspension and may serve more time if the KHSAA decides to make a statement.

All three refs got involved in trying to separate the scuffle and no one stood back to observe the none participants (proper protocol wasn't followed). There should have been other ejections and technicals (at least two Cov Cath players left the bench area and walked onto the floor and at least one MC player did the same). I wonder if the KHSAA is going to review the video and impose some other sanctions?

I disagree that it being a whole bunch of nothing. I think it puts a label, albeit maybe unfairly, on both teams.

I see this as a big deal. Refs miss things all the time but that doesn't make it acceptable for players to fight. We all know that there are cheap shots delivered all the time that are not detected but does that make it acceptable to retaliate? That's a big NO in my book.

I agree. I'm sure both kids are good kids, but you NEVER throw a punch on a basketball court. Have to be more disciplined.

After watching it a couple times, up until the punch, it was the MC kid doing most of it.

 

I was also under the impression before my post that there were just pushes back and forth then a punch thrown. MC guy completely tackled him before the punch. While I don't agree that it's nothing, it's not terrible.

I was at the game, have watched the video, and looked at multiple pictures of the event and if you were not there to see how physical the game was....it is very hard to make a judgement. This is not the first fight or aggressive behavior in high school basketball. Yes, it is very disappointing that it escalates to that point but there is often emotions firing and players are "fighting" hard to give 110% to their team. They are high school kids and not adults so it has to be a learning process of development and maturity. If other schools or coaches make a judgement about these teams for one altercation, that is plain wrong. It was a good game with both teams playing hard! It is unfortunate that the main focus has been the fight incident.

One of the two refs out top have that action. Only one has the ball. The other has off ball.
