Did I read some of the stuff in this thread correctly? Highlands folks are being accused of making excuses...for winning? That is crazy. Perhaps some folks should have waited a day before commenting.

I have gotten accused of disrespect and hate for suggesting that Conner NEEDED to play tougher competition in order to get better. This is a perfect example. It sounds as if Highlands was able to expose a weakness - in this case, the inability to break full court pressure against faster, smarter and longer opponents. Guess what Conner will now work on in practice and get better at? My only point I had made earlier, and got "clawed" for, was that Conner wasn't going to be able to improve on any weaknesses until those weaknesses were exposed. They WERE NOT going to get better by blowing out teams who couldn't expose them. At best it would give them a false confidence, of which I think some Conner folks had. Conner fans DO NOT need to get mad and depressed. This is what Conner needed and IT WILL help them improve. Who cares about the best record and number 1 ranking compiled from easier opponents? It is better to find someone to challenge you, and show you what to work on and get better at - and Highlands did that. I think this game earlier in the season would have served Conner better, but time will tell.

I agree having Gambrell would have helped for sure, IMO when Pluto was on the floor they handled the press. Conner was up 14 went Pluto got her fourth in the 3rd and then I think Scott became the primary ball handler and took her out of her regular scoring position. There were a lot of turnovers when Pluto was on the bench. I think if Pluto did not get her fourth Conner may have handled the pressure a little better and having Gambrell to fill in that role would have helped for sure. Great game and congratulations to Highlands on a good win.

This is exactly right and was the difference in the game. Conner's point guard got her 4th foul around mid-point of the 3rd quarter. That left Conner with Scott as the only ball handler and led to all the turnovers against the press.

Wow can't we be friends lol! Gambrell certainly had to be missed! I remember her playing years ago with a few AAU boys trying to handle her. She will be a good one! To both teams this thread is very interesting and I hope they get a chance to play again! Two great squads, one did not handle pressure well and the other shot very poorly based on what I have heard in the past. Still take comfort in programs that are on the upswing.

I did notice no posting of the boys Boone/HHS game. Which means I can draw my own conclusions .

From what I hear another brillantly coached game...Heard the Birds were running the flex again...Wow!!

My game notes:

Love Coach Stamm; down 16-12 in the 2nd and HHS on a run, he sits chili, no timeout and his team goes on a 11 point run and forces HHS to call the TO.

MM is really good for Conner, strong post player and lots of tenacity. Not sure why she didn't start the 2nd half??

Conner needs to think pass to beat the press vs. dribble.

The 1-2-2 half court press offense is something Conner needs to practice over and over again during the next couple of mos. That was their achilles tonight. The HHS pressure was tremendous and Conner will need to solve this in order to make a trip to BG.

The Maines technical was key in this game. Need to keep composure during times of adversity.

JS needs to shorten up her passes. I saw 3 throw aways on long pass attempts.

Hope to see a rematch in March. Two good teams with a ton of talent on the floor.

The Maines technical was the turning point & gave Highlands momentum. She loses her composure in every sport she plays & is a loose cannon IMO. Meyers is just returning from injury so I think she is earning her starting spot. When she was on the floor & they got her the ball, Conner looked good!!

I do not think anyone is saying Gambrell would not have helped. The point I was making is that Conner was handling the pressure until Pluto got her fourth. IMO when Conner is getting pressed they need both Pluto and Gambrell on the floor together and then Scott can do what she is best at doing which is shooting lights out!

Great thread! It would be fun for BGP if these 2 teams meet in the Regional tournament!

WOW!!!! I get my feelings hurt when someboday called me a name last nite, go to bed, and wake up to 2 more pages of excuses...

Well the good news for Conner fans is he wont be getting out of bed anything soon, he went on a roll well into the morning...LOL

Hurry up everyone lets talk some normalcy here before he gets up...

I know my daughter is very sore this morning, she knows she was in a war last nite. Refs let them bang pretty hard imo but hey that definitely favors Highlands.

Also please understand my post are not excuses. I have no skin in this thread but just stating what I observed. I do think if Conner has PG on the floor, Pluto or Gambrell that would have taken some ball handling responsibility off of Scott. Scott IMO opinion is the NKY MVP year to date and she can only do so much. It was stated earlier each team played their hearts out and all the girls tried to do their best! Again congratulations to Highlands on a great win!

Congratulations to the Bluebirds for the great win on the road against a good Conner team. And great job to B. Adler, looks like she had a great night.

As big of game this seemed to be, how come I cannot find any write up anywhere on line in any of our wonderful local news agencies? Thoughts?

Good question. I think it's because neither team gets any RESPECT in NKY. Lol! And yes, before this blows up, that was sarcasm.

Completely unofficial:

HHS lead by Adler with 19 and Schaeffer with 14.

Conner lead by Meyers with 18 (great game by this young lady) and Scott with 12.

HHS overcame a horrific night of shooting. They were 26% for the game and shot 21% in the first half. Unofficial stats had them missing 21 layups (a stat the HHS crew keeps). It was ugly shooting for the Birds. To give you a couple of examples...Shaeffer, usually a very nice free throw shooter (shot over 80% last year) actually air balled a free throw and I think they almost airballed two wide open layups. Not sure what was in the air tonight, but it reeked havoc on the birds shooting!!! Haven't seen them shoot that bad all year. I know the first insinct is to say the defense caused that. Conner plays good defense, but I'm not talking about the contested shots. I'm talking very good looks!

I don't have all of Conner's stuff, so I'm a little reluctant to post their stats. I think they hit 7 threes. Their largest lead was 14 in the 3rd qtr. and I think they were 13-14 from the line. Highlands late pressure really caused the cougars to struggle.

Scoring by qtr

HHS 6 12 15 21

Conner 12 16 12 8

If you are not talking about contested shots and you are talking about very good looks. Then what is a uncontested shot?

I assume it means Highlands found the holes in Conner's defense & took full advantage of it. Conner has some quick guards but are slow underneath on help side. Hopefully Conner can learn from this loss in moving forward. Highlands won't be the only team that will press so if Conner doesn't want a repeat loss they need to learn to make strong passes & step up on the rebounding!!!

This wasn't the best game played by either team in my opinion but I congratulate Highlands on their come from behind win. I'm sure Coach Stamm was up late lastnight trying to replay the 4th qtr in his head. Good effort by both teams and I won't be surprised if these 2 meet again in the Regional Tournament. 2 very talented and well coached teams. Good luck to them both the rest of the season.
