Ding, Ding, Ding we have a winner. IMO if you are not skilled offensively then you need to have your defense create opportunities for you. Your defense can do that if you encourage your team to deny passes, beat the cutter to the spot, get a hand in the face of a shooter, mix in some zone schemes as well as various presses. It is not a good thing when the opposing coach is yelling out your plays to his team before you even start running your offense.

That happened to me one time when I was coaching. I was calling plays out and Trent Steiner from Simon Kenton was telling his players what was coming before we crossed mid court. It was a long night!!!

Pathetic. 8-6 4 min into game and the revolving door opened up. Subs come in and offense hits a standstill. Birds were stuck on 11 from the 4:30 mark in 2nd qtr until 4:52 left in 3rd.

 

16-10 at one point and then Jags hit 3 straight treys within 60 seconds. Look up and its 25-10.

 

Witte had Mcneil guarding him for 3 min in 2nd qtr but not once did they post him up.

 

The Birds played fullcourt man/man the entire game and they cannot do that with the personnel they have playing right now.

 

Its becoming very hard to watch is all i can say.

 

Cooper has a good team but they are not as good as Covcath, Holmes, NCC imo. Maniacci cannot score with his back to the basket. Mcneil had a nice game today, hit the three and also drove the lane.

 

Noticed Brendan Buten had shoulder on ice, another injury for the Birds.

 

I gotta be honest i didnt expect a win today but to score 5 points in 12 minutes between the 2nd and 3rd qtrs its a joke.

One thing you are overlooking here with Cooper is this; although in games this year they have been very hot and cold on offense at times which kept their scoring low at times, their defense is pretty good. Look at the games they played and you will see tthat more times than not their defense is a major reason they have won.

Cooper hangs their hat on D. Combine that with a HHS team that struggles offensively and you get 39 points.

They did play tremendous defense but the Birds didnt exploit the obvious mismatches. For instance, Witte had Shelton guarding him and they had Witte trying to post up on him. There was no opening there, but if you bring Witte out on the floor and let him face the basket he crosses him over and attacks the rim. They finally did this in the 2nd half and Witte got to the line several times and converted a 3 pt play. He had Maniacci on him as well and brought him out to the top of the key, crossed him over and attacked. Trying to post up a 6'2 kid on a 6'5 kid is just silly especially while the perimeter is being guarded very closely.

 

Witte had Mcniel guarding him as well for 3 minutes and not once did they post him up, they actually ran the offense on the opposite side of the floor away from him. Houliston is good at attacking the rim but he could not do it yesterday. I dont know if it was the pressure defense or his knees but it was not happening. Turner was firing them up and I have no problem with that, you gotta put the ball up if you want a chance of it going in.

 

At times in the 2nd half it was pretty much the Bird players getting the ball and just going to the rim with the rest of the offense standing and staring. No assemblance of teamwork whatsoever. Even when the Birds would set a screen on the PG's man, the PG would not even look back at him rolling. They would look for another guy coming his way to hand the ball off to.

 

Cooper though is a very good defensive team and they did play a huge part in the Birds inability to score at times. I just thought certain matchups could have been exploited and they werent.

 

Then on top of that you go fullcourt pressure man-man all over the floor for the first 4 minutes of the 1st qtr and you are down by 2 points. Where did that get you? It got your best players supposedly tired so you sub them out for 3 sophomores of which one is a part time PG and is expected to bring the ball up the court against a trapping press. Which brings up another issue...the press break. One guy taking the ball out and one guy at the free throw line (two players guarding him) the rest of the team down the floor with their guys. ????????????? Ran the same press break most of the game. Ball gets thrown in and caught miraculously and then the guard is trapped and cant get it back to the cutting player. I just dont get why there arent other options for breaking the press or atleast more options.

Congrats to Cooper on another nice win. The Jags are the type of team that could pull an upset at the region but would need to pull 2 of them out of the hat to win the region IMHO. Can they do that? Chances are not, but they have a shot with Coach Sully, with their good depth and they will get after it even more relentlessly on defense come tourney time.

They need to get Maniacci and Shelton more touches in the paint IMO. If they can really work at getting them the ball it would open up the 3 ball for them even more. Morgan needs to develop a jump shot as well. Several times the Bird defenders gave him 5 feet and dared him to shoot and he wouldnt.

First trip to Cooper High School. They have a nice setup there.

I like the make-up of the Cooper squad. Morgan is a quick point guard with a good ball handling skills. He doesn't look to shoot much (maybe by design). Collins is solid at the two guard. He looks to score - not afraid to put it up from distance or take it to the rack. McNeal is very solid at small forward. He plays very strong with the ball and can flat out shoot it. Shelton is a very physical power forward. Not impressed with his offensive game, but it is not needed with all the other options. I don't think we saw big Lou's best effort - HHS doubled him at every opportunity and sagged in the lane so dramatically that the 3 point line was wide open. The boys off the bench did a nice job giving the starters a rest.

 

Cooper does play very good team defense. I'm not sure you can judge how good it is off this game. HHS had no inside game. They didn't even try to get the ball inside. They drove the lane a couple of times, but for the most part settled for contested jump shots.

 

After the Dixie game - I stated maybe this HHS team is better than we think. Can I retract that statement? They haven't shown that level of competiviness since. The closest was the effort down in Pikeville versus the Middlesboro squad.

 

I am still holding out hope. The Birds have not played a game since the Brossart contest with their starting five intact. Eight consecutive games missing at least one starter. Finally both Turner and Houliston are healthy, and True has a football combine. It has been said many times by different posters - this team is not deep enough to be missing starters. Newport this Tuesday - and barring any unforeseen developments - all five projected starters should be in action. Come on boys, don't let me down. I'm running out of excuses.
