Hats off to Mayfield. I was impressed. It is a pleasure to watch a team like this. They were extremely business like. Never seemed to get rattled early. Very well coached. The coaching staff exploited exactly what was my main concern in the second half. The Beechwood D-backfield, A young bunch that has better days ahead. This was a blowout and could have been much worse. Good luck to Mayfield next week.

Noticed some of the line were frosh and huge! I think one was the biggest guy on both teams. It should be interesting the next few years with that group.

I was close, predicted the score 35-17. Mayfield always has BW's number, and expected about the same this year. Curious as to when this Mayfield reign of dominance will end, given BW's really good freshman class, but then again, last year's BW seniors were extremely good as freshman, and the class as a whole didn't pan out at all. We'll see how the future goes.

JJ is just too much. He runs hard and uses the stiff arm to his full advantage. The QB does what he has to in finding the open guy.

Good question.. Not many, I'm sure.. Back in the 4 class setup, it seemed every year I went to LVille, Bwood was there and I went to several in the 80s, 90s and 00's..

Kudos on the Beechwood burgers. They were delicious. Mayfield was it's own worst enemy in the 1st half with the dropped passes. Really poor pass defense by the Tigers... coverage was way too loose. Speed may have contributed to the big cushion. If not backed up so often in the 1st 2 quarters, Cards could have thrown more often. New blood in Bowling Green this year.

The Tigers came out strong following a big opening kickoff return by Joe Studer. They only needed to go 41 yards and they made it look fairly easy with freshman QB Kyle Fieger hitting Studer for a 9 yard TD pass less than 3 minutes into the game. Miles Sletto's extra point made it 7-0 Tigers with 9:35 left in the first quarter. The Cardinals picked up one first down then had to punt. The Tigers followed that with a 3 and out and then Mayfield put together a 90 yard TD drive. It looked like they were in trouble when a holding penalty made it 1st and goal from the 20, but Jake Guhy hit Jordan Brown for a 20 yard TD pass. Luke Wynstra's extra point tied the score at 7 with 59 seconds left in the 1st quarter.

 

Beechwood came right back with a long drive of their own that started at their 32 and took them to 1st and goal. Fieger fumbled a snap and Mayfield recovered at the 6 to stop the threat. The Tigers defense forced a 3 and out and a short punt gave the Tigers the ball back at the 35. The Tigers offense kept clicking and Fieger hit Max Shover with a 5 yard TD pass on a very nice read, 14-7 Tigers with 4:35 to go in the half. Mayfield moved the ball and got into the Tigers red zone. Rash made a late substitution on defense that seemed to confuse the Cardinals. Guhy looked to the sideline for a play change and the center shotgun snapped the ball while he wasn't looking moving the ball all the way back near midfield, making it 4th and almost 30. The Cardinals had to punt and the Tigers had it at their own 33. Fieger was injured on a rollout pass and a holding penalty forced the Tigers to try and run clock. Mayfield rushed the punter and almost got a block forcing a rare short punt by Nussbaum that gave the Cardinals the ball at the 36 with no timeouts and about 2 minutes to go. No problem for the Cardinals. A couple quick completions got them inside the 20. Then a couple incompletions set up 3rd and 5 from the 13. Coach Morris made what would be a risky move on most teams and handed the ball to Jonathon Jackson. Jackson did his thing and would not be denied dragging Beechwood tacklers the last 6 or 7 yards and into the end zone. With 52 seconds to go in the half it was 14-14.

 

As others stated above, it was no contest in the second half. Beechwood had 4 possessions, three 3 and outs and then finally one first down on their last drive. On the other side, Mayfield seemed to move the ball at will. Any time it got to a tough 3rd down, they gave the ball to Jackson and picked up the yards they needed. Here are the Cardinals scoring drives:

 

79 yard drive on their first second half possession, Jackson scoring from 1 yard out, 21-14 with 9:36 to go in the 3rd quarter.

 

72 yard drive on possession 2 keyed by a 61 yard Jackson run with Guhy hitting Brown on a 9 yard pass, 28-14 with 6:56 to go in the quarter.

 

78 yard drive opening the 4th quarter with Jackson scoring from 1 yard out, 35-14 with 8:35 to go in the game.

 

This game was very similar to the Beechwood Mayfield game 2 years ago in Ft. Mitchell with Mayfield taking control in the second half. Congratulations to the Tigers on a solid season and good luck to the Cardinals next week.

Jackson was run down by 2 Tigers defenders on his long run. Brown was also caught from behind by 2 defenders when he looked to be headed for a TD after catching a pass on a slant pattern. I wish Beechwood would have matched up and played more man. Guhy picked the zone apart.

Dropped balls hurt us in the first half. Our line play was devastating in the second half for BW as well as JJ being a beast. Guhy was very good as well.

 

Anyone know anything at all about Fairview?

I am not sure I know what the heck happened in the second half. It is easy to say Jonathon Jackson and use that as an "excuse". But there is much more to it than that. The thought that comes to mind is the Mayfield coaches made adjustments that worked and Beechwood didn't. How else do you explain it? All you can do is tip your hat and say congratulations to the Cardinals. They have Beechwood figured out and Beechwood can't figure them out. I need to think about this one a little more to try and make some sense out of it.

JJ was on the better team. Nussbaum is the better player/prospect. Nuss ran him down on a long run after being spotted 15 yards. Nuss is a special athlete ! Good luck to both in the future.

TP ... the Mayfield offensive line was definitely better than expected. But Mayfield is always better than expected in the eyes of Tiger fans. The dropped balls definitely could have made the first half look different.

 

As to Fairview, they sure made a statement tonight. I believe someone stated in a thread that they have multiple backs that are really good. That is about all I know except they are dominating people.
