Post Office reports 15 Billion loss this year.

Featured Replies

Just goes to show folks that the government has no place in business. They can't even run a monopoly without losing money...

2 things to start with...

1. Go to 5 day delivery max but would like to see it down to 4.

2. Raise the price of a stamp a couple of cents.

Can't remember the last time the mailman put anything worth a crap in my mailbox. They should go to mon, wed, fri delivery.

A billion here, a billion there - pretty soon you're talking about real money.

So what you are saying is your wife doesn't get the Victoria Secrets or Venus catalogues?

Privatize the postal service. It is a waste of taxpayer money.

Uh, it gets no taxpayer money.

Yes it does. While it is not a full on taxpayer supported system, the post office is supposed to be set up - as mandated by the federal government - not to make a profit through issuance of fees (stamps and other charges). They also receive taxpayer money for the Postal Service Fund. The postal service is a governmental agency. I would say it is more of an indirect taxpayer organization.

They receive some tax money, just not for day to day operations. They still need to privatize. Any time congress has to take action for something to be successful, there is a problem.

Post office needs complete restructure. From Pensions/retirement, work days, process improvement. My company process on average (Heavier at Month end) over 3000 pieces of mail each day. We just got done with today's mail run, and of 3126 units of mail, 248 were not ours. That is 8% error. Hell we got 2 pieces of mail for a company in Minnesota for peats sake.

Sell it to Fed ex, DHL or UPS. They would love the distribution. They have drivers on the same routes daily. It would make their business more cost effective. Don't give it to just one of them so the cost of a letter stays cheap. Competition is good.

I'm also good with Monday Wednesday and Friday delivery.

The problem with privatization that no one addresses is that any firm that takes over this operation is going to be hamstrung by its mandate. The Post Office is obligated by law to deliver mail, which is considered a necessary public service. As such, it's not a profitable enterprise. How would a private firm make this profitable? Other countries that have tried this have not had much success.

I suppose you could make the case that with the growth of technology that there's no use for a traditional postal service. Most of this communication can be handled electronically and it's getting closer to the point (yet not quite there) where everyone has access to this technology. But, then you have to contend with a massive layoff of all postal workers. That would have quite an impact on our economy and aid systems.
