I was surprised that many of the teams that would not make the playoffs in a "Top 2" format voted for a "Top 2" format. While many teams that always make the playoffs voted for a "Top 4" format.

True but it looks as if the majority likes the 4 team format.

I agree. I was just a little surprised by how some schools voted. Many of the "non-powerhouse" schools seemed to vote in a way that would eliminate them from the playoffs, and the "powerhouse" programs seemed to want the four team format for some reason.

Somewhat true, although as Hellbird has pointed out, a majority of the coaches(approx 58%) were in favor of 4 teams from each district making the playoffs.

My son isn't very good at setting a curfew for himself.

Good point - I see your son all the time running the streets.

Mike Fields had this comment from Phelps Head Coach in his notebook:

 

Sifting through the rubble of last week's first round of the high school football playoffs: 70 of 95 games were decided by at least 20 points, and 58 teams won by at least five touchdowns.

 

Phelps Coach Jesse Peck's winless Hornets lost to unbeaten Fairview 69-0 in a game he felt shouldn't have been played. "Not all of us deserve to be in the playoffs," he said.

"We traveled 21/2 hours with 14 kids to play one of the top teams in (Class A). It didn't do us or Fairview any good. When I played at Johnson Central (in the late 1990s), making the playoffs meant something. We had to win some ball games."

 

As for the argument that all playoff teams benefit from extra week(s) of practice, Peck doesn't buy it. "We start the first of July and go to the first of November. By then I don't know what you can teach your players they don't already know."

Peck thinks only the top two teams in the district should qualify for the post-season.

I suppose I am rather hypocritical for starting a thread with quotes from coaches and then posting another one this morning and then openly asking if coaches, who have a vested interest, are the best peopel to determine playoff structure. :banana:

I'm here for you Oldbird and will help you work through this.

 

 

Your thread title was about coaches that get hammered in the first round of the playoffs. Your quotes are from those coaches.

 

When you ask if coaches were the best people to determine the playoff structure - you were responding to the posts pointing out that 58% of ALL coaches in the survey liked the 4 team format. All coaches is not what your original question asked.

 

Try not to be so hard on yourself.
