Mike Fields had this comment from Phelps Head Coach in his notebook:

 

Sifting through the rubble of last week's first round of the high school football playoffs: 70 of 95 games were decided by at least 20 points, and 58 teams won by at least five touchdowns.

 

Phelps Coach Jesse Peck's winless Hornets lost to unbeaten Fairview 69-0 in a game he felt shouldn't have been played. "Not all of us deserve to be in the playoffs," he said.

"We traveled 21/2 hours with 14 kids to play one of the top teams in (Class A). It didn't do us or Fairview any good. When I played at Johnson Central (in the late 1990s), making the playoffs meant something. We had to win some ball games."

 

As for the argument that all playoff teams benefit from extra week(s) of practice, Peck doesn't buy it. "We start the first of July and go to the first of November. By then I don't know what you can teach your players they don't already know."

Peck thinks only the top two teams in the district should qualify for the post-season.

I totally agree!!! I even posted something similar early in this thread.

Plus we know what Cooper parents think. They think that at least 3 should make it (at least this year). :lol:

 

Well, in all seriousness, my only point on this entire topic is to make sure good teams get in the playoffs. To make a blanket statement like only the top 2 district seeds whould make the playoffs is leaving out a lot of deserving teams as this past week has shown. 16 of those top 2 seeds apparently didn't deserve to be in the playoffs either because they lost to #3 seeds who according to some shouldn't of even been in the playoffs in the first place.

 

That has been my only argument the entire time. Don't make it so black and white because you will leave out more deserving teams than those that do get in.

 

Now maybe if there was a system that said only teams with .500 or better records in district play make it in then I could actually live with that. You could then get rid of the winless teams and not have all those blowouts people are concerned with. You could even say take the #1 and #2 seeds in all the districts are garunteed in (just like Conference tournament champions in the NCAA BBall tourney) and the so called "at large" bids would go to the other teams that have .500 or winning district records. Then if you have uneven teams in a bracket, the highest seed gets the first week bye.

 

That would make the most sense. It would eliminate teams with no wins from getting in the playoffs and would also eliminate a lot of blowouts in week 1 of the playoffs. IT would also make the regular season mean more because district game would mean a lot more than they currently do.

I have no idea how close his team came to reach its ceiling, but my guess is that the peformance of his team this season was more impacted by there only being 14 kids on the team more than it was impacted by his opinion on the value of another week or practice.
