What do coaches who get hammered in the first round playoff games think?

Featured Replies

My suggestion is to win the games you need to win to be the 1st or 2nd in the District!

Cooper has a very good team this season but they lost the game they needed to win to be that 1st or 2nd seed, then even with the other nine wins Cooper had, Cooper couldn't get enough wins out those teams they played/beat, to be 1st or 2nd in the District.

I honestly don't know what else to say to you than to win those district games or play a better schedule!:idunno:

Actually they were the #2 seed going into the last game of the season. conner got that seed because they beat CCH which had more wins for the tie breaker to give them more. It's easy to say they should of won the games they needed to win to get the #1 or #2 seed, but they still won every game they played except that 1. The other 2 teams tied for district had more losses, and you say it's Cooper's fault? Really? They can't control, nor can any other team control how many wins their opponents have on a season. Cooper played 4 6A teams out of conference this year.

Sorry OldGuy, you will never convince me that a team that win every game but 1 in an entire season including the beating #1 seed in the district doesn't deserve to be in the playoffs.

Personally I love the playoffs going into December. I like it as a way to kick off the month.

Go to a ratings sytem that lets the top 16 in no matter location. Like WV. and Ohio.

Out of 96 games we had 16 upsets?

How many of those were #4 over #1?

How do you pick the top 16, ratings systems are all flawed no matter how you spin it.

Still waiting on all those top 2 seeds only making the playoff to give a reasonable solution to that 3rd team that doesn't make it that happens to have a better overall record than the 2 top seeds in the district and the same district record as the 2 top seeds in the district. Coin flip isn't a reasonable solution.

I did read 1 viable solution and it was the first one brought up in all these threads and that is to have a District Tournament. top 4 teams in the district plays eachoter for a chance to go to regionals. It's the same amount of games but at least you would have district champions in all the districts advancing.

Very simple solution. Play a tougher non district schedule. Everyone knows the three-way tie breaker rule. Go schedule some teams that you're confident will win some games. If you lose, no harm because it's not district play. If you win one of them, there ya go.

Worked for Conner this year. There ya go.

What is the big problem with letting every team in the playoffs? Baseball, Softball, Soccer and even our precious Basketball let's ever team into the playoffs...why does everyone one get on their high horse over Football?

Every sport you just listed plays for ONE state championship. Football gets SIX times the opportunity to win a state championship than the above sports. Do you want football to go to a one class system? If so I'm with you, then let them ALL play in the postseason.

If not, then it's apples and oranges and football can't have it's cake and eat it too.

Kentucky's playoff system is broken, and I think most objective people know it. My solution would be to cut football back to four classes, and then things get much more realistic.

And, I'm not a fan of the often proposed "super class" system. The schools in the "super class" would still have the same advantages in the other sports in a one class system. It would just be another crutch for football schools to avoid playing the best of the best. The state has bent over backwards to give football teams enough crutches already. It hasn't worked out so well.

Avg. margin of victory for first round 33.5.....waste of a week!

This speaks volumes. When the average margin of victory is five scores, something needs to be tweaked.

All excellent points Sandman!!!

You may want to do your research before making such comments. Cooper and conner's schedule was identical except for 1 game. That game was against a team which Cooper had never beaten before and they won.

So your reasoning is very flawed. I'd love to know how scheduling up to play 4 teams in a higher class is not playing a tougher schedule as well as scheduling teams the school has never beaten before being considered not a tough schedule. This schedule includes 3 of the non district teams that last year combined for 23 wins.

It's not like anyone looking at Cooper's schedule this year thought it was an easy schedule before the season started, actually before the season started Cooper was playing 5 teams that were in the coaches top 10 pre season poll and Cooper didn't even make the list. 4 of those teams were non district games. So for you to say they didn't schedule like conner did then you have no clue what you are talking about. Pre season Cooper had more teams they were playing against that were ranked higher than Conner's teams.

One last thing, you are saying the #12 team in the entire state should not make the playoffs. You are also saying a top 5 team in class 5A in the entire state in the majority of polls should also not make the playoffs, and finally you are saying a team that is ranked higher than Conner in over 90% of the polls in state and nationally should also not be allowed in the playoffs as well as the team with the best record in district 5 and finally the team that beat the #1 seed also should not be allowed in the playoffs....Genius!

I still don't understand all the fuss, who gives a rats butt if their are blowouts, need i remind you that the team you don't think deserved to be in the playoffs in the first place Cooper just blew out a 2 seed which blows your entire playoff ssuggestion out of the water. Also it proves that Cooper did belong in the playoffs, you may want to think about what your suggesting before posting it.

So according to you, a team with only 1 loss the entire year (as well as having the best record among all the teams in it's district), a team that is one of the co-champions of district this year as well as defending district champion from last year should sit home.....Genius! All I can say is thank god you have nothing to do with choosing which teams get in and which don't.

Have you checked ohios system its worse than ours. One other thing, you could move closer to work.

Avg. margin of victory for first round 33.5.....waste of a week!

So maybe some 2 seeds shouldn't be allowed in the playoffs since that avg margin of victory includes 2 seeds that lost also.

Come on sir, Cooper is what five years into football, so of course there are teams they haven't beaten before.

So that's two of us, that think you either win that District game or improve your schedule.

Do you think it's fair that Holy Cross is in a District in Basketball with CovCath and Holmes, two teams who year in and year out have pretty good bball teams? Think what they might have done in the 36th or even the 34th. Heck think Baseball with CovCath, Beechwood and Holy Cross in the same District, when some other District don't have maybe but one team as good as those three.

Heck how many more District titles or State football titles would CovCath have if not for being in the same district as HHS! The rules are the rules......

As Sandman said Football has State Champion with only 30 odd some teams in each division they have to beat, while the other sports (baseball, basketball and soccer to name three) have to beat literally everybody to win a state championship!

I thought we were talking about football, not what CCH could do in baseball if they were in a different district.

How many teams in baseball make the playoffs compared to football? I'd say a lot more in baseball, so why aren't we saying baseball is more flawed than football?

The rules are the rules as you said, so why do you have such a problem with them?

I still haven't seen 1 reason why Cooper shouldn't be in. They played the same schedule Conner played excpet for 1 game and they beat every team that conner played in the same schedule. They finished with a better record than anyone else in the district, they also beat both teams Conner lost to, they also are co district champions, yet you don't think they deserved in. Didn't this past playoff game prove they deserved to be in? They beat, not just beat but demolished one of your #2 seeds. They shut out a #2 seed in the playoffs that had averaged over 37 points a game all season, yet you don't think they deserved to be in the playoffs? That is a pretty flawed system you are recommending where the best teams don't get into the playoffs at all.

IF you want to cut down on the number of teams that make it into the playoffs then lets go even further and simply say that any team that lost to a team that wasn't a 1 or 2 seed in a district should also be out of the playoffs, that would eliminate a lot of teams for you. The teams that are in the playoffs just this year that wouldn't be in because Cooper played them and beat them would be So Oldham, Ryle, Boone, HC, Campbell, Dixie, Holmes, Scott. You do that for the entire state and you will cut down a ton of teams from the playoffs, that would make you and sandman very happy. You only make the playoffs if you are a 1 or 2 seed in your district and you never lost to a team that isn't a 1 or 2 seed.

What I'm trying to say is this. Don't punish a team that has a better record than anyone else just to cut down the number of teams in the playoffs. You do that and you then have a playoff system that may not have the best teams in the playoffs. Isn't it always better to assure that the best teams in the state have a chance at winning the title?

Cooper may lose, shoot they may get blown out this next game, who knows? But at least you assure one of the best teams in the state this season at least gets the opportunity to play for a title which they more than deserve to. I'm not saying it just because it's Cooper, I'd be fighting just as hard for Conner if they would of lost last week to CCH, they also had a great year and won every game in district except for 1. There is no reason any team that 1. has a winning record and 2. Only lost 1 game in district play, should not be included in the playoffs. Now I have no problem if you want to change the system to only take teams with winning records in district play say .500 or better make the playoffs. that I could live with. But to say a team that goes 9-1 on the season and wins district albeit co-champion shoulnd't make the playoffs is just stupid period.

"Basketball does it" argument is getting really old really fast.

Kids do not get physically beat up during basketball districts.

The daddy's need to get off the"my kid made the playoffs" or "my kid played 11 football games instead of 10" argument.

Playing 10 football game makes you no less a man than playing 11. Every kid doesn't deserve a trophy either.

I get your point, but you must not live in the 5th Region area.

Yeah that's what we should be basing our decisions on, "What OHIO thinks". I for one could not care less what OHIO thinks, but then again I don't live in NKY and have OHIO Envy either.

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

.....as well as having the best record among all the teams in it's district.....

You keep saying this, but if they really had the best record in the district they wopuld be hte district champions and the #1 seed. Obviously, if they are not the #1 seed, tehy did not have the best record, they tied for the best record (with others). Maybe they should have played those teams better. Sooner or later the regular season has to mean something or why bother playing it, lets just have a few weeks of scrimmage games and go into the playoiffs. Oh, wait. We are already doing that now.
