What do coaches who get hammered in the first round playoff games think?

Featured Replies

You keep saying this, but if they really had the best record in the district they wopuld be hte district champions and the #1 seed. Obviously, if they are not the #1 seed, tehy did not have the best record, they tied for the best record (with others). Maybe they should have played those teams better. Sooner or later the regular season has to mean something or why bother playing it, lets just have a few weeks of scrimmage games and go into the playoiffs. Oh, wait. We are already doing that now.

I said they had the best record out of all the district teams (overall record)

They did have the best record out of all the district teams.

Cooper 9-1

So. Oldham 8-2

Conner 8-2

And to help you out more, Cooper is district champions along with Conner and s. Oldham, so you are now saying District champs don't deserve to be in the playoffs? Really?

The tie breaker system is what is flawed, not who gets into the playoffs.

Do you think

You didn't do your research, you say they should of played those teams better...which teams are you refering to? they beat every team outside the district. They only have 1 loss in district.

The 3 teams that tied for district champs all went 4-1 in district play.

South Oldham beat Conner

Conner beat Cooper

Cooper beat South Oldham

Not sure what your point is, you can't play any better non district than winning every game you played. This inlcudes beating every team that the #2 seed in district lost to.

All of this arguing, every single year, about ONE extra week of football, as if it's some great travesty to have one more week.

For all those out there that have it in against Cooper, allow me to give you their resume for what I believe more than qualifies them for being where they are right now going into week 2 of the playoffs.

1. 2 time district champs in only their 2nd year in 5A

2. 7-1 in district play in their 2 years in 5A

3. 10-1 record in 2012

4. defeated every 6A school they faced this year

5. Defeated every team out of district played this season

6. Beat the #1 seed in thier district this year

7. Beat every team the #2 seed in the district lost to this season

8. Ranked higher in the state in the majority of polls over both the #1 and #2 seed in their district this year.

9. Ranked #12 in the entire state of all teams and all classes in maxpreps

10. Also ranked higher than any other team in their district nationally

and the icing on the cake

11. Just shut out a 2 seed in the playoffs who averaged over 37 points a game the entire season and was also State runner ups last year. Beat them 48-0 in round 1 of tthis years playoffs.

Yet people on here don't think they deserved to be in the playoffs. Makes me scratch my head and wish I had what they're smoking.

Exactely!!!!!! I don't get it.

It's as if they just need something to complain about. I think they'd compalin about the sun coming up every day if they had nothing else to complain about.

Wether you like the system or not, at least it is a playoff system that puts the best teeams in the state in the playoffs. Much better than having a system where the best teams are left out all toghether which these people are asking for.

This is the system in KY so you have to set your schedule correctly so you are not in this position. Do not schedule Holy Cross. Play Cov. Cath like Conner did. If you want a higher seed, play better competition. Cooper probably does not mind playing on road this year. Their field is the worst in NKY

Their field is terrible, I agree with that lol.

As far as scheduling goes, they are 2 year contracts so they had to play those teams. We had no open dates this year that I know of. Also holy cross was defending state champs, who knew they were going to be that down this year? So you know, I believe Coooper dropped both holmes and Holy Cross next year and picked up NCC and SK.

Also they had the identicle schedule conner had except for 1 game. So why did Conner schedule those same teams?

So I ask you, are you actually saying Cooper didn't deserve to be in the playoffs this year?

Also curious to what team you follow? I'm curious beecause it sounds like youa re saying the only teamss that should make the playoffs are teams that wwent undefeated the etnire season. Because that is the only thing Cooper didn't do this year. They lostt 1 game. So according to you, any team with 1 or more losses should be knocked out of the playoffs wwhich would mean no team from District 5 in 5A woould of made the playoffs.

Settle down Hellbird. No one ever said that Cooper does not belong in playoffs. They just do not deserve a higher seed this year. They lost to Conner and under the current tie break rules, fell short and had to settle for the 3 seed. Most people are upset about all of the blow outs in the first round of the playofffs especially 4 vs. 1 seeds. I believe you said on here that playoff rounds should be local before advancing past region. I agree with that. A lot of programs not only were blown out but lost money in the process due to travel. Every playoff system will be flawed but this is what we have so coaches need to schedule appropriately in case of a tie. Enjoy Cooper's run. Do not get mad at everything that is said on here. I hope Cooper goes far and more importantly can maintain success in the future. It would be good for NKY football

No not even close to what I believe. In a perfect world I would love fewer classes and more schools in district play. I loved the old 4A NKY district with 8 teams I believe. (Conner, Boone, Ryle, SK, Holmes, Dixie, Campbell, Scott) Only 4 could go. Every week there was a lot of drama and no huge blowouts in first round of playoffs.

Seems you are the only one to think that Cooper got ripped, then again as a parent of a player, you are just a bit biased toward Cooper. I told you I though Cooper had a very good team this season but your coach should have realized that a tie breaker could kill you.

Have your coaches contacted HHS as they need a game?

Holy Cross? They were over loaded with seniors last year, figured it was a one and out and not sure they will be as good next year as even they are this year. I mean when you can't even field a frosh team after winning a state title, sad indeed!

Give me a break on baseball, basketball and soccer! They are much tougher to win a state title than in Football where it's you against the state, compared to you against 30 odd other teams!

All well and good but then again, according to the rules that are currently used by the KHSAA, you are indeed the 3rd seed!

Say it isn't fair, say you are as good or better, say you tied for the district championship but realize that you are the number three seed and if many had their way, only the 1st and 2nd seeded teams would get into the playoffs and in that case, Cooper would be on the outside looking in!

Cooper just might win the 5A state title but the rules indeed are the rules!

I never said a 3rd seed should not be in the playoffs. I never said I had a problem with how the playoffs are set up. What I did say, or more accuratley was simply pointed out that all those who think only the #1 and #2 seeds should get in, well Cooper just proved that logic is totally flawed. Flawed so much that it makes that sytem even worse than the current system.

What you just said in your last sentence proves my point. Say, although I don't think they will, but just say they do win the state title. Then that would even be more proof that the system you and others have wanted to put into place would mean the best team in the entire state in 5A would not of gotten in and proof that the best team didn't in the championship period.

Wouldn't you rather have a system that has the best teams in the state in the actual tournament? That has simply been my point all along.

Why would anyone in their right mind want a playoff system that possibly excludes the best teams in the state? No one has answered that simple question yet.

Instead I get lame arguments saying "Well they should of beat the teams they needed to beat" how stupid is that???????? Like anyone knows before the season this year what other teams records would end up being. That is just stupid plain and simple. Cooper beat EVERY TEAM EXCEPT 1, how many teams can say that? Cooper also beat every team that beat Conner...how many teams can say that also? YEt in your seriously flawed system, you would leave the #12 ranked tam state wide out of the playoffs while 60 or so other teams get in. That is just stupid. That is like saying UK shouldn't of been in the NCAA tourney last year because they lost their own conference championship tournament.

I just think everyone who whines about the football tournament must simply be afraid of Cooper period. Afraid they may knock thier teams off they think should of gotten in.....ooops that already happened. Cooper already knocked off a mighty #2 and defending state runner up. Hate when that happens, when your system is proven flawed already after just 1 week of the playoffs.

Seems you are the only one to think that Cooper got ripped, then again as a parent of a player, you are just a bit biased toward Cooper. I told you I though Cooper had a very good team this season but your coach should have realized that a tie breaker could kill you.

No, you actually have it all wrong. I never said Cooper got ripped. They are in the playoffs just like they should be. I have no problem with that. It is others that have a problem with Cooper being in and those are the people I am speaking to.

I am asking them why they don't think one of the best teams in 5A in the entire state shold be excluded from the playoffs. They can't. IF I saw one reasonable reason to why Cooper should be out of the playoffs then I would be fine, but the fact is I haven't seen one good reason at all to exclude them. I will say it again, they have already proven that they are better than a 2 seed that was in the finals last year.

I really couyld care less if they were a 1 seed or a 4 seed as long as they got in with the record they had this year. Shoot, they are a better team than they were last year, and last year they were the #1 seed. More proof they deserve in this year.

That I agree with. I was simply showing everyone who said that only taking the #1 and #2 seeds that that sytstem was flawed even more than the current system and pointed to what occured in district 5 this year to prove my point.

I, like you, would rather see a local district tournament to determine who moves on to regionals. that makes the most sense to me. Let the top 4 teams in each district play to determine district tournament championship. that would also make the local area games more exciting because 1. you don't have to worry about travel and should always have good crowds and would also make the first 2 rounds more exciting.

That would be the best way to go in my opinion.

Just look at what the matchups would of been in wk 1 of the playoffs for 5A in NKY

WK 1 Game S. Oldham vs Scott

WK 1 Game Cooper vs Conner

WK 2 game would be district tourney championship

WK 3 move on to regionals

It would be much much better and the teams that are most likely will get blown out don't have to travel 2 hours to a game, which already showed that a lot don't travel to. This way the gates would be up, the teams wold make more money and they would be more exciting because a district tourney chamipnship is at stake.

Because in past years and a lot of football people think it should go back to that, those rules would be as such that Cooper would be out as the third seed.

Plain and simple in the old system, winning those district games meant more than they do today!

Which shows how flawed that system was and probably why they went away from it.

If any change was to be made, I'd go with my idea about district playoffs before moving on to Regionals.. Makes more sense than any other solution and would generate more money for all schools involved.
