Discussion of the 2012 Kentucky High School Football Class 5A Playoff Preview

Featured Replies

Conner absolutely dismantled and shocked unbeaten Franklin Co. on their home field last year. FC also had Timmons and Woodside. I see Conner doing it again after they take out Montgomery Co. Lots of short memories in 5A.

I always lean towards defense over offense in key, even matchups. Out of Franklin Co., Conner and Cooper, Cooper is the best defensive team. However, when you have special talented players they make a difference and that makes Cooper the least of the 3. Cooper doesn't have any player on the same level of the star players on Franklin Co. and Conner. I believe we have one common opponent:

FC 63 Scott 31

Conner 39 Scott 32

Cooper 46 Scott 14

That seems to back up my comment that Cooper has the best defense. Cooper has given up more than 2 TD's in just one game all year - their loss to Conner. I will chalk that one up as Cooper's bad mis-step of the season. I am going to stick with the defense and pick Cooper to win this region

Take Timmons off of FC and take Collins off of Cooper in the Scott games. Now we have apples to apples since Conner was missing Fogle. Bad comparison imo. I don't think Cooper's offense can keep pace with FC, but I do think Conner's offense can keep pace. They proved it last year with many of the same players they returned this season.

Good info I wasn't aware of. Fogle obviously makes a difference on both sides of the ball.

Good comments concerning the offenses. Franklin County has scored 56+ in every game this year except two. I don't think Conner's defense can stop them but I didn't think Conner had a prayer against Cov Cath so what do I know. I see that FC / Conner game being another scoring fest like last year but I think FC turns the tables this year. Cooper has a better chance at containing the FC offense but FC is going to get points. If Cooper faces FC, can they hold FC below 35 and can they score 35+ on FC? I think they can.

Region III is very balanced. Many are picking Cooper to win but the Jaguars have to go to a reallly good Anderson County team in the first round. Many people still remember the Conner beating of Franklin County last year and with the way the Flyers have defended this year, could we be in for something similar? And what about South Oldham? Nobody is talking about them, but they are the #1 seed from District 5. I believe there are five legitimate regional title contenders in this group and all five would stand a good chance of going to the Region IV winner (likely Harlan County) and winning.

If, If, If If.....Bottom line is this, I know that the Jags are focused on know one else but Anderson Co. because as we have all seen, on any given Friday Nite, ANYTHING can happen (i.e. Conner over CovCath and Montgomery Co. over Cooper last year). Teams that start to look to the 2nd and 3rd opponent are destined for failure. All 3 of these teams play a tough opponent. Nothing that any team has done to date means "jack" cuz like the NCAA B-ball tourney, it's when or go home.....

If Harlan County makes it to the state semis will they be on the road or at home?

At home. They are Region IV and it's an even numbered year. It makes me wonder if the kicked it in high gear to finish their stadium off this fall, knowing that they could potentially play four home games. It would make sense if they did.

Franklin Co. is the very least of my worries. Let Cooper concentrate on Fridays game first. Anderson co. worries me, evenly matched teams in my opinion and Cooper is playing on the road.

I'd be mildly shocked if Bowling Green won the region championship, state semifinals, and the finals all with a 35-21 score. Be crazy to see 3 straight games with the exact same score, otherwise I agree.

I think Bowling Green will win 5a again.

I would agree that bowling green is the favorite to win 5A. However I don't know if Franklin Co will be their opponent in that game. Franklin Co and Cooper could potentially both loose in the first round. Cooper more so than Franklin County. Anderson county is a tough team, and could beat Cooper if the jags overlook them (similar to what happened to conner last year in round 3) we've seen all year that Franklin county's defense is the peverbial open gate. They haven't really stopped anyone all year. If Scott can focus, and tighten up on a few defensive stops, they can realistically beat Franklin.

Aside from any upsets, I see Franklin County and Cooper advancing. Second round games will be key. In a Conner vs Franklin County rematch, I look for a similar outcome as last year. Conner comes out on top during a shootout. In my opinion, the winner of the Franklin County vs conner game in the second round will play bowling green for the title.

With all that being said the teams still have their first round games to play tomorrow night. I have seen many upsets in the first round. I hope all the teams come focused and ready to play..

IF Fogle is 100% then Conner will be tough to beat and may make it to the finals, but then again they could lose Friday night also

For my homey, Leman Boyd, I want a Conner/BG matchup.
