Obama Romney 10/16 Debate #2 Discussion

Featured Replies

What's the 47% comment have to do with foreign policy? Isn't that the focus of this debate?

Doesn't matter the focus, IMO. It will get brought up somehow.

I do agree with BGH that the town hall setting has been President Obama's best format. I do think this will play to his strength. Mr. Romney HAS to come off as "everyman" in this one.

I would say the format favors Obama on style. But, the conventional wisdom holds that this is probably the most dangerous format for the favorite as there is a slightly higher degree of spontaneity (and very slightly because all of these debates are tightly controlled). Someone could ask a particularly poignant question, the candidates have to interact with an "average Joe," and they have to stand and walk around a bunch - there's more opportunity for error or some type of gaffe. Since Romney is the challenger, Obama probably has more to lose under this scenario and Romney's risk/reward ratio is probably slightly more favorable. Then again, the dynamic might be a bit different after the last debate. Obama would like for something to really re-energize his campaign and Romney is under pressure to repeat the last performance.

As an aside, this is also why the partisans who negotiate these debates make them so conservative - they don't want a lot of unpredictability or turmoil that could upset a race, which I complained about in another thread. Both campaigns are apparently incensed that moderator Candy Crowley has said she plans to ask follow-up questions, for example.

Just in--"I think Obama should perform better in the next two debates since they're much closer to sea level!"--Al Gore. :D

This one is all issues I believe. The last one will be exclusive to foreign policy.

My bad, thanks.

I just hope Romney brings the magic hanky

The election is over anyway. People have made up their minds. The 47% will previal!:thumb:

I don't think Obama needs to win by a wide margin. I think what he needs to do is give voters something that will make them want to vote for him. He can't spend the night playing defense to attacks on his record. He should ignore attacks as much as possible and spend his time talking positive. He needs to get some positive feel into voters' minds.

Romney needs to keep hammering away. He needs to paint the picture of a country completely falling apart. Keep Obama on his heels playing defense. Attack, attack and attack some more. If he spends more time talking about what he wants to accomplish than what is wrong and how Obama is failing, he will lose the debate.

I'm scared.

Of what? Ole Mitt and the Ryan Boy? Or the debate in general? Or that BGH will start another thread?

I like the BGH threads. A fair and balanced BGP is better than a slanted BGP. :D

Of Obama laying egg #2 and losing the election tonight. At least go down swinging.

Obama will attempt to divert the discussion away from his record with jabs at the 47%, Bain, and Romney's personal taxes. That's about all he can win points on, because his record over the last 4 years certainly won't get it done. I don't believe his diversion tactics will be enough, though. People want to hear his plan and when his "change and hope" is suppose to kick in.

According to CNN, the town hall setting is where President Obama is his weakest....Same goes for Gov. Romney.

I am not a fan of these "town hall" debate type settings. Any politician with a reasonable skill set thrives well enough in these as to not look completely dominated. They are given a general question and they have the floor basically to hear themselves give them same ole campaign talking point speeches. They try and make the politicians look more human and down the earth. Which they are not.

PP I don't believe you. I think you're too good at intelligent debate to enjoy those trolling attempts.
