Sense Of Gloom Falls On Republicans

Featured Replies

I probably wasn't as clear as I should have been. I do not feel the country will fall apart if President Obama is re-elected. I just think his philosophy of spending our way out of our problems is not workable. I feel that Governor Romney will at least try to put the brakes on spending. I can't agree with putting further taxes on anyone, because you don't treat an alcoholic (the Federal Government) by giving them more alcohol (money). Our country will not fall apart, immediately, no matter whom is elected President. I am just trying to look at the cummulative affect, long term.

I think there is a need for government spending at times. There are people that need help. But government spending is not a cure for a poor economy, but it can be a cause. Government programs should be a by-product of a flourishing economy.

In order to be able to help these people, the country needs to get control of its spending. However, in order to lower the deficit, the tax code is going to need to be changed also. You have to address the problem at both ends, IMO.

Just for the record, Rasmussen is not a well respected poll.

Just for the record, Rasmussen is not a well respected poll.

Why? Because you say so?

Real Clear Politics uses it. It was the closest indicator of the last two presidential elections.

There were discrepancies in 2010, but not the last presidential elections.

So once again, why?

And please don't cite The Daily Kos.

Just for the record, Rasmussen is not a well respected poll.

Is NBC's a respected poll?

The not so well respected Rasmussen Poll now has Romney leading in WI, MO, CO, IA, and NH which is a change from yesterday. Obama leads by 1 in OH and VA and 2 points in FL.

Is NBC's a respected poll?

Is NBC a respected anything?

I've had a sense of gloom for the last 4 years, I suspect it to get worse, regardless of who wins this election.

As Sports 3311 stated, Rasmussen & Pew Research were the most accurate in 2008. Both had the race at 52%-46%, Obama over McCain. Obama won 52.9%-45.7%.

So if by "not respected" you mean "most accurate" I agree.

I was wrong with saying they were the most accurate in 2004 also, but it was pretty close.

They had one bad year in 2010, but other than that, they've been pretty dead on.

I don't understand the notion that Obama has this locked up. Piers Morgan was saying this last night and others in the media are perpetuating it.

It seems his "47%" comments won't kill him either. Gallup had a poll saying that 36% are less likely to vote for Romney because of the comments, while 20% are more likely due to the comments. It's likely that these two groups would have leaned their respectable ways regardless.

Gotta admit, those numbers surprise me. I was very angry about his comments, and I thought others would be also.

I like fivethirtyeight.com .

They recently had Pres Obama's chance of winning at 80% but over the last week or so it has dropped.

Currently projecting about 300 electoral votes for the President.

A few key states can flip that.

Because there are only about 9 states that matter and based on the electoral math Romney has to win almost all of them to get to 270. He's losing in everyone of them except North Carolina. The electoral count will be very similar to 08 but probably with a much closer popular vote which is reflected in the Gallup/Rasmussen polls showing a close race. Republicans insiders and even folks in Romney's campaign have acknowledged the difficulty he faces.

This is a voter suppression technique. If the situation is acknowledged as hopeless then voters will not bother to vote. It seems that suppressing the opponents vote is the name of the game this cycle since neither base is overly fired up.

NBC leveraged this technique in real time in November 2000. NBC (and other networks) called Florida for Gore while polls were still open in the Panhandle. Many Repub voters left the lines after hearing this news. So telling people that its hopeless is now a well understood technique - either in real time or a couple of months ahead of time.

That's not really the case. He wins Ohio, Fl, NC, and Virginia and one of the others and he wins the presidency.

Every toss-up state is a state that Obama won last time, and Indiana won't be very close for Romney. Electoral count will be much closer.

Of course it'll be difficult. It's not easy to take down an incumbent.

North Carolina is a heavy Romney lean.

Also, in those swing states, Obama only has a 48-46 lead overall. Anything can bump those numbers one way or the other....

Some are saying Michigan could be in play also. I doubt that though.
