JayRaySL Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 I was just wandering if I am the only one who thinks that South Laurel is very unappreciated by there very own.I mean its kind of ridiculous that you have a state champ last year and a #1 team this year and you cant get a single game on the radio unless its at South or in the tri-county area if your lucky. If you live in Laurel county you know its not because of lack of funds.Just would like to hear some opinions.

It is surprising. All of the Corbin games are broadcast, even when they go to Florida, so maybe I'm spoiled, but it seems as though you have a case.

I know the feeling re: the radio. Sometimes I have to work and I can never get a home game on the radio unless the opposing team's radio station travels to Lee's Gym. I'm not familiar with the logistics of Laurel County radio stituation. Is there a sports talk channel or any local channel that is dedicated to sports and local events? Perhaps the fans should get together and demand radio coverage. Maybe a business or two would then be willing to sponsor such an undertaking?
cshs81 Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Aren't most of the potential listeners already at the game?
Les Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 The local radio station does cover both North and South, but at times I believe their coverage is spotty. I think it comes down to if the person or persons is dedicated in covering the local games. I know there are times on the weekend when I don't have to cover a weekend game, but I do because I feel the readers would get cheated if I didn't. When it comes to coverage WCTT does a fantastic job. Any tournament the Corbin team is in WCTT follows and the same goes for 105.7 for Clay. They don't miss a beat. It is a shame when your team is the No. 1 team in the state and the No. 2 team in the region (North) and th coverage is spotty. I'm nnot knocking some of the broadcasters there because they are good guys, but.....anyway.

Why not do like CovCath does up in NKY and use the Internet instead. CovCath does all its football, and basketball game and even did some soccer and baseball games too. It lets the former stuednts away at College or those who will be out town listen and even our Service Men serving our Country in our military out of the Country listen to the games, and believe me they do...... Thanks to Bill Hinkle and Cincinnati Bell CovCath Internet Radio
cshs81 Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Thanks to Bill Hinkle and Cincinnati Bell CovCath Internet Radio Dennis Hinkle is who I think you mean. Bell provides them with wireless access if I understand correctly. They actually use a software program from a different company. Its not very expensive. The challenge is to find the people to do the games on a regular basis.
Jim Schue Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Supply and demand? I think it's more like penny-pinching. Last year Tony and Co. went everywhere to cover the Cardinals.
The Professor Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Aren't most of the potential listeners already at the game? Not if the games away.
STRIKE3 Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 You've played I believe 7 games out of Laurel County, at: Whitely Co. Marshal Co. Winston-Salem, NC Frankfort Louisville Which overnight means lodging, salary and sponsor costs....plus announcers being able to work these trips into their daily schedule. I and several other try to follow South's results, but not sure it's a state conspiracy.
DragonFire Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 I can sympathize. Central has been to four straight Sweet 16's and is 80-2 versus the fourth region in the past five years, but they don't have every game broadcasted. If they travel, EXPECT it not to be broadcasted. But all of Bowling Green's are (who by the way haven't made the Sweet 16 in 15 years). Maybe one day they'll realize in Laurel County that they need to cover their premier programs better.
The Professor Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Our local radio covers all of our home games, but none away until tournament time. I'd much rather them cover our away games and skip the one's at home. Most people who are interested will go to home games, but won't make a trip to Elliott County or Letcher Central because of the distance.

MountainThunder Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 I would not be surprised to see the AD at North Laurel look to start an internet broadcast. With the AD's son at South being on the Cardinal team, it would not surprise me to see South Laurel do the same at some point. There are basically 2 stations (same owners, same building so basically one station) in London who have been covering the Laurel County sports teams. I think money is the reason they are not covering all of them. During football, it isn't an issue with only 10 games for each to cover meaning 20 regular season games. The basketball teams have well more than that total each. However, what I didn't understand this past season was that the 2 sets of broadcasters both covered the North v South football game on the 2 different stations. Kind of a waste of resources IMHO. Surely, they can get the sponsors to cover the expense of broadcasting these games after all we are talking about the defending State Champs and the 12th region runnerup from last season, not a couple of teams with no following or level of success. Last year they covered nearly every game for both. I would like to see that again this season. Maybe the sales people need to step it up a notch and find the sponsors. I promise you that they would be out there for these 2 programs to get it done.
