Congratulations to Pendleton County. I did hear Brossart was without their starting QB and a 300 pound lineman for the game. any stats on Brossart's Elbert? If QB was out I'm sure he had a bunch of yards?

Wins over NCC, Lloyd, Newport, and Holy Cross will make us the Number 1 seed! Will we make the playoffs this season. well ............................ We are going to have to get a lot better and beat one of the above.

A game of two halves. Pendleton County marched down the field on their first possession, scoring to make it a 7-0 football game. Brossart later countered sending the teams to the locker room at halftime deadlocked at 7s.

 

Pendleton County kicked off to the Mustangs to start the second half, and through a series of Brossart fumbles, interceptions, and blocked punts, scored three unanswered touchdowns (w/PATs) in the first six minutes of the third period to make it 28-7 with 6:27 to go in the third period. The Mustangs were up to the challenge, scoring a pair of TDs themselves (1 2pt Conversion) closing the gap to 28-21 with over 3 minutes to play in the game, when Austin Pyles took the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a Pendleton County score, giving the Cats 14 points of seperation and for all intents and purposes, the game. Brossart was able to punch in one final score with 36 seconds to play and DID recover their on-sides kick, giving them a glimmer of hope from mid-field. One more fumble-turnover (I believe our fifth of the night) for good measure doomed the Stangs and allowed Pendleton County to escape with the 35-28 victory. The game played out very similar to the one played a year ago, with Brossart running out to a long lead, and then PCo making the late-game charge.

 

Jake Elbert ran for 309 yards on 37 carries and 3 touchdowns. From the air he was 4 of 12 for 37 yards with 3 interceptions. Sean Tieman carried the ball on 9 occasions for 43 yards and 1 TD. Elbert had 12 tackles, Jacob Dennis 8, and Garrett Ahlbrand 7.

 

I do not have any stats on Pendleton County. Both teams have their work cut out for them this weekend. Brossart hosts NCC and PCo hosts Holmes.

True! A trademark of our football program over the years is to have to overcome adversity. This year appears to be no exception.

 

Elbert had 309 yards on 37 carries and 3 TDs. He also served as interim QB at times and threw 12 times with 4 completions for 37 yards and 3 interceptions.

Freshman (5-4, 120 lbs) Craig Pffeferman did a creditable job as Pelgen's stand-in. 0-3 in the air.

Is Soph. Spencer Hackworth not playing anymore? I remember him stepping up late in the season last year in the QB position when Jesse Orth went down.

Spencer is in a position that a lot of our Brossart athletes face. His primary sport is basketball, as is Saunders, Trentman, Burns, Zink, Clay Kramer, Rieger, etc.., all who would be nice additions to the football program, but because basketball is their primary sport and follows right on the heels of football, they opt to take the conditioning/open gym route and prepare for the hoops season, going in 100%, rather than risk injury which seems to associate itself with playing football. Ditto Nate Verst and Tanner Norton, baseball guys with a future in the sport. Teddy Mac and Austin Shannon enjoy playing football and are big, rugged kids who can usually survive a season on the gridiron.

 

Another Catch 22. Add the aforementioned guys to the football roster and see what a difference it would make, BUT it ain't gonna happen. Football is going to have to develop its core from kids whose primary sport is football, that is why I think keeping the core of the Junior High Colts is our salvation, otherwise, Brossart football is going to remain a specialty sport, and without the wholehearted involvment of our primary student/athlete base is going to struggle to be successful.

 

This is not something that is specific to Brossart, and our guys are not being "selfish" or "elitist" by holding out for their primary sport. With the exception of Brady Hightchew in previous years, I don't think a lot of the NCC hoops guys play football. I don't see Schulte listed as a wide-receiver, or Drew McDonald playing the line. It's simply the nature of the beast, and with cross-country, golf, and soccer being fall sports and basketball following right in, in the winter, we simply don't have enough primary sport football players (it takes a lot) to be competitive at the 2-A level right now.
