Why Isn't Romney Winning?

Featured Replies

While I believe that President will be ans should be reelected, given the weakness in the economy you would expect Gov Romney to be ahead. He isn't. I believe there are two reasons. First, most people are aware that things were bad when the President took office and are willing to take that into consideration, but they would vote for a reasonable alternative. Second, I think that Gov Romney's argument is counterintuitive. Being counterintuitive doesn't make it wrong, but it does make it harder to accept and requires strong explanation. His argument is that he can lower tax rates for everyone, take it back for "high earners" by closing loopholes, increase defense spending and reduce the deficit. Since that doesn't sound right it is important that he be able to explain how it will work. When asked which loopholes he would close Gov Romney said "ones for high earners". When asked to name even one loophole he said "ones for high earners". When his running mate was asked which loopholes they would close he said they would let the "peoples representatives" decide. Is it any wonder people are skeptical?

Simply, Mitt Romney is not a good candidate.

I don't believe Romney's deficit has anything to do with intellectual, rational thought. First, evangelicals are just not going to accept his Mormon faith. Second, there are just too many struggling people in this country that simply cannot relate to Romney. Both in terms of his wealth, and in terms of his willingness to "fire" people without regard to consequences.

I believe the biggest problem with Romney is he has not put forth a positive vision of his own for the country. It feels like the same Republican arguments, a bunch of complaining and not a positive vision of what things should look like. I think Romney has hung a lot of his case on being against Obamacare and yet much of Obamacare is his own plan in Massachusetts. There just isn't a good feel and nothing I can buy into. He has till the first debate to find some vision/story he can sell or things are going to head south fast.

Another issue is demographics. Liberal constituencies are growing faster than conservative ones. This is why republican GOP candidates always move to the left politically after the convention. They have to appeal to major liberal constituencies like the elderly, who cannot exist without medicare.

I wouldn't shovel too much dirt on Romney's grave just yet. There will be a time in the next two month with the president will have to defend his record. He himself said he should be a 1 term president.

He defends his record every time I hear him speak. I think his record is very easy to defend. Think about a trip to Chicago. If I leave my house to drive to Chicago I'm disappointed if Im not there in five hours. If I leave from Miami, I have to evaluate my progress in much different terms. When President Obama took office, the economy was in Miami and headed to Key West. We may not be in Chicago yet, but we are passing through Nashville.

It is because poor people are getting checks every month and they know if Obama is re elected that they will continue to receive the checks forever. If Romney is elected, he will cut those checks and people who won't work and get welfare checks every month will now be not working and not getting welfare checks. Idiots.

Manipulated statistical sampling. If you over sample women and registered Democrats by 8% you get a tight race.

Except about 2/3rds of the country think he took us through New Orleans and is headed for Dallas.

Right Direction or Wrong Track - Rasmussen Reports™

Romney is a poor candidate and Obama is a poor president with the power of incumbancy behind him. Lose/lose proposition.

We may be in Nashville, but we have a flat tire, cracked windshield, busted radiator, & the transmission is slipping. We'd get all that stuff fixed, but we're only carrying a credit card & we've accumulated $5.4 trillion additional debt on it since we left Miami.

I concur. I think that the better republican candidates are hanging back and waiting until 2016. Why put forth that kind of cash into the campaign trail when the trend is that presidents stay in office for 8 years? Just my opinion.

Also---I don't hate Obama. He is my president so he has my respect. But he does not have my vote.

^ This is my answer to the original question.

I believe these are the two worst general election opponents in my lifetime.

I'm not poor, and get no checks from Obama. It would be kinda cool to get a check signed by Obama, though. :D I digress...In reality, I'm not that far removed from legitimately poor. Neither in personal circumstance, nor the circumstance of my parents and many aunts/uncles. All receive some sort of assistance...some are totally disabled. Some are elderly. Some are elderly AND disabled. Some are unskilled, never graduated high school and unable to find a job. I'm intimately aware of how government programs assist many in need, and have had to utilize certain services at one point in my life as well. What Romney vaguely describes would be devastating to a very large portion of the population. Many denounce those on assistance as "freeloaders". I know first hand that many worked their whole lives till certain circumstances prevailed, and they could no longer help themselves. There's the aunt who has a degenerative spine, who's been on social aid since her husband of 30 years died 20 years ago. There's the uncle who worked in construction until he fell through a roof, landing on his head, rendering him mentally and physically disabled. He probably could have avoided almost 30 years of social aid had his wife not divorced him when she found out he would never recover. There's another uncle who worked in construction until arthritis sidelined him. He opened a thrift store after that, which was doing quite well...then he had an aneurysm and now can barely function. There's my father who worked 30+ years making the doughs for the bread you eat, one of the lowest paying jobs in that industry. He had to take early retirement because he tore his calf muscles away from his bones pushing these 400+ bins of dough to the next point in the process. His pension is $300 a month. I have a cousin who dropped out of high school at 16 to get married because of an abusive, alcoholic father. She wound up divorced at 18, and a drug addict. Eventually she turned her life around and was able to finish school and raise her kids with some government assistance. Now, her own drug addicted daughter has left her own 4 kids with my cousin, and she finds herself back to needing aid.

But, I guess my family are idiots.
