To me it sounds like Owsley's fans are being a little sensitive after their team clearly tried to "pull one" on Lee. Almost as if Lee would freak out when Neeley and Smith came onto the floor. But, I think Lee fans may have went a little to far by calling some of the members here liars.

 

On another point, I heard from some one who was at the game that Smith and Neeley argued a little bit about who was going to bring the ball up and who was going to shoot. Is this true? If so, dosen't bode well for Owsley.

I was at the game, and I've heard that from others who were at the game, but I didn't see it with my own eyes. Doesn't make it true or false, but I'd say that Neeley had to adjust to playing with Smith. Internal strife is never good for a team, but I don't know that any exists here.

Most Lee and Owsley fans get along just fine. It seems to me a few folks have got all cranked up over nothing.

The deception that was so blatant was when Neeley told me FACE TO FACE BEFORE THE GAME that he was not playing, and the fact that both smith and neeley didn't bring gear into the gym. Don't you agree that's a little deceptive.

But we are talking about a 16 and 17 year old kids here. Maybe he was kidding with you, I don't know.

But Owsley County's officials didn't mislead anyone. Neeley is not one of Owsley's officials, he's a basketball player. Friends who know him know he likes to joke at times. He's a good student and a great person.

 

And I certainly didn't mislead anyone. What I posted several days ago was exactly what I knew at the time....but I am not a representative of Owsley County. If things changed the day of the game or before that I was unaware of, then that's beyond my control.

 

However, I don't think the Owsley officials are required to send out e-mails or press releases on the status of their basketball players so some fans from Lee County won't get the impression that they're getting the wool pulled over their eyes. I'm sure that never crossed their minds, and it wasn't their intention. Frankly all these false accusations and post-game whineing comes as a surprise to me.

Does Smith being back really bother people that much, or if Neely and Smith were argueing. Smith is a good athelete that made a mistake he payed for his mistake and he is back playing now. Why should Owsley call Lee County and tell them that Neeley and Smith were going to play? Is basketball that important? Why not be glad you have a good team. Did Robert make a difference in the outcome of the game, or did Lee want to run the score up more than the point spread was anyway? I wasn't at the game and really I am glad I wasn't. It is good to be competative but when it comes to this stuff maybe the two teams shouldn't play at all.

To answer your question in post # 17 about why Smith was wearing a faceguard, please read post # 44. It had nothing to do with "hockey" or basketball.

 

I apologize if anyone took that seriously. Nothing personal intended to the young man, it is intended for those involved in the deception. That said, this was probably a situation that the young men on the team devised to try to gain some kind of advantage in order to win. A youthful experiment gone awry.

 

If the Owsley administration deliberately misled folks about when Robert would be playing, then that appears more of an act of desperation than anything else.

 

Heck, teams travel and play other teams that they have never seen play nor do they know who's on the team so that seems silly to me

 

There has always been an intense rivalry between these two schools and everyone does know practically everyone who plays...on both teams. Imagine if the same situation occurred between a Breathitt vs Jackson City game. Just suppose that Eli transferred back to Breathitt and the coaching staff said that he would be elgible to play after Feb 1, and then he happened to play in a game vs Jackson City prior to that date. Do you understand that this would cause some ..... suspicions... to arise? The Lee vs Owsley game is very comparable.

 

The really sad news is that Robert Smith .... mearly plays basketball to condition for baseball

If this is true, then why is Robert Smith even playing? I am sure that most of his team mates feel that it is more important than a PE class when they are on the floor. It is mid-way through his sr year, his team has one win to date, and the Owls played worse with him than without him in his debut game.

 

The reason I ask is he is ALWAYS turning around to see what the fans of Lee County reaction is to whatever is going on, on the floor.

I think that the coach is sometimes surprised that the fans are being so vocal, and on more than one occasion he has asked that they tone things down. He is definitely a class act and one of the more dedicated coaches around. Lee Co is lucky to have him.

 

I do know they had been waiting on the KHSAA to give them the final okay on Robert's return. For all we know, they may have just recieved it today or very recently.

More accurately, for all we know they may not have received it at all. If one doesn't want controversey, then why invite it?

I think that Lee County fans have said that they are glad Smith played because now they know what to expect in the districts if they play each other. I don't think they should have called but I think that they were childish in misleading the Lee County people. But, you're right, no difference in the outcome. I wish I was at this game, I would like to have a scouting report on Smith for Friday. GreenMachine, maybe you should read all the posts before posting.

Maybe, but I've seen it several times over the years, eligible? injured?etc. and someone always has it from a good source that such and such a kid won't play. Last year it was Cleve Washington playing? Not playing? It's always a buzz among the fans and parents but I have to say I don't recall the kids or coaches even commenting on it whenever it happened.

A couple of years ago in a baseball game at Owsley, Robert was hit in the face with a baseball. He has been to the doctor on and off since then and they finally decided that he needed surgery this past summer because of breathing difficulties.

I've settle down Ronnie. I didn't disagree that they didn't show up without gear. I simply tried to explain that these are just teenagers. But the Lee County faithful are using decisions made by teenagers to point fingers at Owsley officials, as if they made some devious plot.

 

BTW, I didn't have to be at the game last night to know what happened. All I have to do is read this thread and talk to people who were there. Owsley's fans didn't start the accusations when this thread started.

 

I'm not so bothered by the insinuation of trickery on Owsley's part as much as I was with the implication that Smith had been practicing and had probably broken his nose while doing that. Some of it was a poor attempt at humor. Smith's nose was broken two years ago playing baseball, and he had to finally have it re-broken and re-set two months ago. He couldn't have practiced if he had wanted to. Now he has to wear a faceguard the rest of the year. Those kind of sly implications from some of the Lee posters on here should not have been made.

Yes, there is a conflict between Lee and Owsley and there shouldn't be, but this conflict will probably always be there, because of things that happen, such as the letters that was sent from Lee County to the KHSAA about Robert Smith. But there is one thing that everyone should remember, these are children and what we do will reflect what they do including the lack of sportsmanship in the adults in the crowd last night and in this forum. Sports was set up to teach sportsmanship and teamwork to young adults but it has become an adult ego trip pushing their children to hate others because they are wearing another color and are from another county or another part of town and I think this is very wrong. Yes, Lee County beat Owsley County twice this year and I say congratulations to the Bobcats and wish them luck, but for the adults, you might need to grow up and be role models to your children.
