Let's fix UK Football

Featured Replies

Does anyone think that Western going D1 in football has affected UK at all, at least with recruits in Western KY area?

The only way to "fix" UK football is to leave the SEC. That's the reality of the situation...

I agree to the extent that for UK to compete for a conference championship it would have to leave the SEC. But I'm not sure that you have to win conference championships to fix the problem. For instance I don't things were all that broken under Brooks. Not SEC championship caliber but capable of competing with LSU on a given Saturday. I don't know if that makes sense or not.

I don't think so, could be wrong but I see no evidence of it. Other than UK sucks but that has been the case for the better part of 100 years.

Not my problem. The football program will always be average at best in the SEC. No fixing involved if they stay...

I guess it depends on how you define "fixing". I completely agree that they can never be better than an average SEC team but they haven't been that very often. So is being an average SEC team considered fixed?

Western has improved, because Willie Taggart recruits Florida well. Especially the west coast of the state.

Makes perfect sense. I was down on Rich Brooks big time in the beginning but he eventually proved me wrong and put an acceptable product on the field. With that he brought optimism that the program was going in a positive direction. In two years Joker has taken the program back to the Bill Curry days and that is the problem for me. I can handle 6-8 wins as long as the team is competitive. Even if 9-11 wins is a false hope at UK getting 6-8 wins and going to a bowl game is not a bad thing for a school like UK. Getting to that point and improving on that is one thing. To go from beating the #1 team in college back to praying for 4 wins is hard to swallow.

It's a shame when UK can finally beat Tennessee but UK fans can't truly enjoy the moment.

They rushed the field when they beat UT. I don't know if they were more excited about beating UT or just the season being over but the did rush the field.

The reality is that UK cannot and will not leave the SEC due to the security of being in that conference. So we will continue to suck at football.

I know. But knowing that beating UT definitely got Joker another year is when the enjoyment of finally beating UT faded. It was like YEAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! To...ah, crap man......

I was more upset knowing I had seen better UK teams take the field that I'd have like to have seen beat UT instead of last year's team. That bothered me more than anything.

There's too much money at stake to leave the SEC. It doesn't make sense financially.

No way UK leaves SEC. Why? $$$$$$$$

Just think how bad the facilities would be if they didn't get those SEC bowl checks each year!

Never said they should or would leave the SEC. Just that they will be irrelevant in football forever because of it. The only "fix" is leaving even if they are never going to do it...

I agree with being competitive, UK was able to beat eventual National Champion LSU a few years ago. Is it too much to ask for to be competitive?

Coaching Change: Need a coach with either enough Star Power to get recruits immediately or a coach that has a system that kids want to play in. Best bet is to get next rising star head coach (no Coordinators) then when he's successful get him PAID!!! Then keep paying him...and give him whatever he wants.

How does recruiting improve: Got to have a system that gets kids to the next level, Better X and O's and elite training and strength staff to help individuals get developed.

Facilities: Player lounge typical of SEC schools needed, update weight room and expand Nutter, don't need track cutting of the corners of the endzone. To agree with an earlier post UK needs a Big $$$ Football benfactor like T. Boone Pickens.

Asst Coaches: Go out and get young, hungry, aggressive asst's, Saban gave Mack Brown that advice after last year. The Coach needs to set the direction but this is where the games are won and lost...again spend the right $$$ on the right people and get the job done.

Bottom line is UK's financial model for football doesn't work like it does at most SEC schools. So either find new money sources that can be poured into football or do what we do better than we are doing it.

Don't think they would leave the SEC. What if they were in the ACC? Big Ten? Big 12?

Basketball is still a major factor. Football becomes relevant. I can see an occasional 8 or 9 win season in any of those leagues.

I still think they would lose money if they left the SEC and went to any of those leagues. The league splitting bowl money payout is worth staying in the SEC alone.
