Man Dies Cuffed In Back Seat of Cruiser

Featured Replies

A small .380 could be easily missed even with two searches. Now getting to it and shooting yourself in the head while cuffed would have been a feat but certainly possible.

I would like to know the history of the gun...

Indeed they are small. A lot of .380 pocket holsters feel like a wallet.

I'm simulating my hands cuffed behind my back. I'm assuming the .380 was in my back pocket or waistband and somehow missed.

No way in hell I can figure out a way to get the gun to my temple.

I don't know the man's age or body type. A young, thin man may not be able to press it to his temple but he could certainly get it close enough to get it pointed in the right direction.

Not to be silly but if you do a lot of yoga you may be able to. Also, prisoners often swing their cuffs under the feet and then have a lot of freedom to move. He could have done that with his cuffs and then put them back but that does sound unlikely.

Also, any shooter worth a darn can shoot with both strong and weak hand.

Guru, you ever have anybody get out of cuffs during your career? If so, how often?

Never out of the cuffs but yes under their legs a few times early in my career. Normally you stop that by cuffing them through one of the loops in their pants.

And yes I have missed things on searches (never a gun) but it is very possible to miss something.

I'm with the guys that he could get his hands around and a small .380 could be missed. But weren't his hands still behind his back when he was found dead? I'm not seeing how he shoots himself in the head then gets his hands back behind his back. Am I missing something here?

I don't think he ever jumped his cuffs in the first place. I think he was able to do it with his hands behind his back.

Couldn't he have put his head to the gun, rather than gun to the head? If the gun was in his pocket, couldn't he put his head down to his pocket and swing his hands to the side enough to pull the trigger and make it go off?

Several years ago around 1990, there was a similar situation in Muncie Indiana. In that case the guy pulled out a hidden gun and shot the officer in the back of the head while on the way to the jail. Cruiser was found after it ran off of the road with the prisoner still locked in the back seat with the officer dead in the front.

Even though it would not be easy, it could happen.

My guess is this is how it happened.

There are a lot of highly implausible scenarios being forwarded in this thread ...

I honestly think it's just magic.

Such as?

Does the article say he shot himself point-blank? I don't feel like reading it.
