August 9, 201214 yr Weird story. Searched twice. Cuffed with hands behind his back. Dies in backseat of cruiser due to a gunshot to his head. Police say they didn't do it. Saying it seems like suicide. Mom says son was shot in right temple but he's left-handed. Police say witnesses' story supports police. http://www.tennessean.com/article/20120809/COLUMNIST0150/308090021/What-really-happened-to-Chavis-Carter?nclick_check=1 I'm struggling to come up with a scenario where he a)could still have a gun on him after two searches b)access the gun with his hands cuffed and c)get the gun upto his head. It will be interesting to follow.

August 9, 201214 yr Chief says they reviewed the dash camera. How can there be any questions if the video exists? Could he have been shot prior to being cuffed?
August 9, 201214 yr Author Could he have been shot prior to being cuffed? I assume he could. However, dash camera would also show him dead in the back seat, right?
August 9, 201214 yr Who kills themselves over $10 worth of marijuana?! Why would the police have shot him when they already had him cuffed and in the back of the squad car? It all sounds very strange to say the least.
August 9, 201214 yr I assume he could. However, dash camera would also show him dead in the back seat, right? I've heard stories of people being shot in the head, and not even realizing it until they saw blood coming from their head. I was just wondering if he could have been shot, and nobody noticed until he slumped over in the back seat or something. The story doesn't mention the cops, or anyone hearing a gun shot. Either way, very strange story. It will be interesting to see if the truth ever comes out on this story.
August 9, 201214 yr If anyone has ever seen or held a derringer, it's possible something like that could be missed. Not long ago, a friend of mine came across one of these on a guy. North American Arms BBA LR BELT BUCKLE WESTERN I don't pay much attention to the, he was left or right handed. I can shoot with both hands, and my wife is right handed but shoots left handed. People would be surprised at what some people can do when cuffed behind there back. I don't know how many times I've seen guys get there cell phone out of their pocket and make phone calls sitting in a cop car. The dash cam may have been running, but most likely it had not been turned around to video the prisoner when this happened. Not many patrol cars have a camera in the prisoner area of the car. Hopefully the IA investigation will shed light on all these things. And if the officers are innocent of any wrong doing, I pray they were in view of the dash cam at the time of the shot.
August 9, 201214 yr Should be interesting to see what happens, have they released what caliber of bullet they thought the wound was from?
August 9, 201214 yr Author Should be interesting to see what happens, have they released what caliber of bullet they thought the wound was from? Article I read said it was a "small .380 caliber handgun."
August 9, 201214 yr Article I read said it was a "small .380 caliber handgun." A small .380 could be easily missed even with two searches. Now getting to it and shooting yourself in the head while cuffed would have been a feat but certainly possible. I would like to know the history of the gun...
August 9, 201214 yr Author A small .380 could be easily missed even with two searches. Now getting to it and shooting yourself in the head while cuffed would have been a feat but certainly possible. I would like to know the history of the gun... A person in Memphis (close to the deceased's residence) reported a similar gun stolen. Not sure if it's been determined to be the same gun.
August 9, 201214 yr Who kills themselves over $10 worth of marijuana?! He had a warrant for his arrest for a probation violation. Add the new charge/double violation and he was probably going away for a good amount of time.
August 9, 201214 yr A person in Memphis (close to the deceased's residence) reported a similar gun stolen. Not sure if it's been determined to be the same gun. If it is the same gun it pretty much tells the story. The physical evidence never lies...
August 9, 201214 yr Author If it is the same gun it pretty much tells the story. The physical evidence never lies... Chances the dash cam caught him committing suicide?
August 9, 201214 yr Chances the dash cam caught him committing suicide? Slim. Very few cruisers are equipped with both dash and prisoner area cameras. Some small departments literally have a camcorder mounted in the car. Even some of the agencies with $ have L3 digital video cameras that you manually have to spin around to video your prisoner, which usually isn't turned around until you are enroute to wherever you are going. My guess is the cam was still on the vehicle for any search or evidence that may be found in the vehicle.
